A River Trip to Avoid Some High Winds  -  Jan. 3rd, 2004

The new year was starting out much the same as the old.  I got up late and was not going to be able to get on the water until after noon.  By noon the wind was already blowing above 25mph and I knew that I was not really in shape to go out onto the bay in those winds.  Instead I decided to paddle on the Nueces River at Hazel Bazemore Park.  It was not a pleasure paddle, it was a workout.  For about 2 hrs I would sprint (a slow sprint to be sure) the kayak for about 10 minutes, then paddled slowly for another 10 minutes, and then repeated the sprint.   I was between 4.75 and 5.0 knots on the sprint and between 3.25 and 3.5 knots for the relaxed paddling.  I finished with stretching exercises onshore as I was letting my gear dry.  It was a beautiful day, but it was not the most fun that I have had paddling.

There was still some color in the trees due to a warm Nov and Dec.
