Crushes, the Scientific Explanation

Who was that wonderful general science teacher? (Dr. Stark?) I was such a dolt about cesspools and gas engines, so I remember some wonderful tricks he used. For instance, having found out about my crush on Pete Meinig, he explained the cesspool stuff by using a mythical house that Pete and I would move into when we grew up and got married.

I think that he had Pete explain the gas engine to me, and hanging onto every word, I still remember how it works. Or was that Mac McGonigle? Teenage fickleness is legendary. Mac lived down the alley from me on Girard Avenue, and his folks always made me feel so welcome.

I can still quote, "Osmosis is the passage of a liquid through a semi-permeable membrane." Bet you can, too.

And the "Bare" truth. . . one of my favorite songs was "All about Ronnie" by Stan Kenton.

Veni, vidi, vici

Remember Mr. Haas, who taught Latin? I think I must have been the only one in class who actually enjoyed it. Since I learned to speak English in first grade, languages came easily. After all, I think you all were still correcting my accent. One of you taught me how to say "iron". Who was it? Turned out well, however, because I ended up learning a few more. (Languages AND mispronunciations.)

My 1954 Spanish teacher at Dana Hall had co-authored Spanish Through Pictures, so we never spoke a word of English in class. In our class of six I vied with a Finnish girl to make a play out of "Frankie and Johnnie" at the end of the school year. We had to play the leads because we were the only ones who knew the script. The teacher had to help us with rhyming the song lyrics.

Bloomers

Remember those gym suits? No further comment necessary.

Or cat's eye glasses? How I wish I had saved the sweater sets. They keep going in and out of style.

Music

For some reason, whenever I hear Tony Bennett's Because of You, I really smell the cafeteria.

Gal Pals and Boyer's Drug Store

Remember the Rocky Road ice cream sundaes there? Can you imagine eating all of them today? Recently I thought I was losing weight, but I'm just dragging it behind me now.

Sandy and Sam Long lived near Boyer's, and I remember fondly visiting them.

Mary Jane Rosenberger and I discussed Life, as Marcia Marx and I did. When it didn't turn out the way we'd imagined it, it was a surprise, but lots of fun anyway for me. Hope it was for you, too.

Carole Fisher came to visit me in New York, too, and we had a lot of fun. What have you been up to, kiddo?

Here's your leaf!

Talk about crawling under the rug

What was the name of our English teacher, "Flip"? My mother was into cruises at the time, so when we came home from one to Europe, I took some pictures and postcards to school.

Well, the pix of David and Venus had no fig leaves, so it became anatomy class 101 in a flash. Aaargh.
