Chapels, Churches, Cathedrals, Temples and Shrines are the most likely place to find beautiful works of art
fashioned in stained glass. One type of artform that has often been confused with stained or colored glass is painted glass.
Painted glass is usually a solid colored glass which is hand painted on one side to depict features.
This type of work is easily discerned by its blank appearance when viewed from the exterior.
The artwork
we have showcased helps highlight their differences. Most stained glass you will see from outside a structure will often be covered
by a plain piece of clear glass. This is to help protect the stained glass from damage due to weathering and pollution.
Great attention is also placed on the building facing so that the sun will correctly illuminate these works.

You might detect a slight difference between these windows and the main panels.
They are meant to by 3 dimensional. There are two spaced layers of stained and painted glass to give the scene more depth.
We hope that this brief look into the world of stained glass has piqued your interest and made you more appreciative of this form of art.
It may also help you to look at future glass art with a more discerning eye.
Although the art shown here was of a highly technical nature you can always enjoy stained glass in simpler forms.
Family crests, suncatchers and other types of stained glass art can be just as appealing.
If you would like to experience this hobby there is a local shop (in Warrenton, VA) that might be able to help you.
You can visit them at Rasmussen Stained Glass or Blue Ridge Art Glass.
