Reenacting background Many of our members are deeply interested in history
and seek to teach and instruct others about it through Reenacting and Living History shows.
All of us have ancestors that have experienced history first hand. They endured
wars and hardships to secure the things we following generations often take for granted.
The people involved with Reenacting and Living History help us connect with our past.
They help us to visualize the period and immerse ourselves in these bygone days.
They hope we will pick up a book and learn more or talk with our older relatives
to try to understand their life. They try to inspire us to do
some genealogical research about our ancestors and learn our own family history.
Many participants have traced their own family history to a specific time period and
attempt to honor their ancestor by portraying them.
Most have a great respect for soldiers of all wars and try to portray them as befitting their individual sacrifices.
There are Reenactors and Living History speakers for the time periods of the Revolution, Civil War,
WWI, WWII, Korea and Vietnam.
Most reenacting is militarily related so most are soldiers of one rank or another.
There is variety in the type or branch of service, foot soldier, cavalry or artillery.
Reenactors of the Civil War and Revolutionary war will be familiar with muskets and cannons.
While those of WWII will know about rifles and tanks.
The participants often spend large amounts of their own time and money to make or purchase period clothing and
equipment. Some travel long distances to take part in activities and usually receive
no monetary compensation for providing the public with this entertainment.
They pay for their expenses out of pocket.
Most enjoy this hobby due to a love of history and out of respect for their ancestry.
If you ever have the opportunity to be a spectator at one of these reenactments,
take the time to talk to the participants.
They would love to talk to you about the period and the hobby.
Just remember to say - Thanks! They would really appreciate it.
Remember, these reenactments are meant to teach and illuminate the past, not
to reawaken old hatreds and conflicts.
To do so, utterly destroys the intent of experience.
"Those who fail to learn from history and doomed to repeat it."
