Livingston Family

Descendants of John Livingston

Generation No. 1

1. JOHN1 LIVINGSTON1 was born Abt. 1736 in Ballybay, Monaghan, Ireland2, and died Abt. 1789 in Hebron, Washington Co., NY3. He married ANN/AGNES BOYD4 in Ireland. She was born 1746 in Stillwater, Saratoga, NY, and died Abt. 1796.

Notes for JOHN LIVINGSTON: John Livingston served as a private in Capt. Alexander Mc-Nitt's company, Col. Alexander Webster's regiment, Charlotte County, New York, militia. He was born in Ireland; died about 1789 in New York. Scotch-Irish Presbyterian. He came over with his family from Ballybay, Ireland, in 1764, and settled on virgin land in West Hebron, N. Y., where he lived till his death about 1788.

"Came to America with his family in 1764 from Ireland and settled in Salem, NY. Although he was forced to leave his farm and remove his family to Williamstown, MA by Burgoyne's invasion, he and his son, John, Jr., returned to Salem to help the local militia put a ring around Burgoyne which forced him to surrender at Saratoga, NY."

"After the war, John Livingstone, Sr. bought a square mile of land in Hebron, Washington County, NY. The portion of this land which fell to John, Jr., was inherited by his daughter, Anne." source: Autobiography of George L. Robinson, "A short story of a long life." 1957

Notes for ANN/AGNES BOYD: "History of Washington Co. NY: Page 151 From an account of Rev. Clark "May 10, A.D. 1764, we sailed from Newry" "we arrived in NY July the 28th." John Livingston was part of Rev. Clark's group but may have come over at a later date.William Livingston was born in 1768 and is listed in John's will as the 7th and youngest son (if they were listed by age) Allowing 2 years between the births of each child that would make the oldest son, John Jr. to be born about 1756 Or even allowing one year between births (an unlikely situation" would mean that John Jr. was born about 1762, 2 years prior to John Sr. departure from Ireland. Thus I concluded that John Sr. and Mary Boyd were married in Ireland.

The deceased was a daughter of the late S. H. Woodward, formerly a resident of this villiage. At an early age, she bacame deeply impressed with the truth and importance of religion and united with the Methodist society in her useful days. She was married in 1834, and with her husband moved directly to the wilds of Illinois, where she resided in the full enjoyment of the true faith, until the autumn of 1847, when with her little family she for the first time returned to her home and friends. During her whole life she exhibited in an eminent degree the virtues which adorn the Christian character. As a companion over cheerful and affectionate, a mother evincing all the attributes which render the namedear, a true believer practicing what she professed, she expired in the full enjoyment of confidential hope. Her remains rest in peace under the quiet shade of the evergreen pine, fit emblem of that life.
