Notes for MARY LANETTE FOSTER: Came to California with her mother via the Isthmus of Panama.

Notes for FREDERICK GUSTAVUS CRAWFORD: The first fourteen years of his life were spent in NY, when he moved with his parents to Dundee, Illinois, where he received a common school education. In 1852 he set out for California on horseback with an ox team caravan, arriving at Placerville October 28 1852, his twenty-first birthday. He still carried the bag of red peppers his mother had given to him to use as a preventive of cholera. It was to be administered in soup form. His traveling chum contracted cholera and his life was saved by the use of this remedy. (So it is told as family lore.) He engaged in mining for one week, panning out $1.08, and paid out $36 for board. He then turned his attention to teaming to and and from the mines, frequently stopping at the DuRoc House. In the course of time, he met Mary Lanette Foster, the daughter of the household, and they were married at the DuRoc House, on November 20, 1860. In 1867 he assumed the operation of the DuRoc House with Mr. Foster, but continued teaming until about 1868. At that time they planted a large vineyard. In the fall of that year he went to Davisville and built a hotel and conducted that business for twelve years. On October 18, 1880, he moved to Willows, Glenn County, and rented the old Willows Hotel which was destroyed by fire May 30 1882. On the ruins, after purchasing the lots, he built the Crawford House, which was one of the best appointed hotels in Northern California. He was the father of Dr. R. Tracy Crawford, noted astronomer of Berkeley, California.

The dates of the various papers in the Crawford collection range from May 12, 1897 to September 1, 1965, as follows:
May 12, 1897. A printed folio program for the 28th commencement of the University of California/Berkeley, held in Harmon Gymnasium at 2:30 p.m. on a Wednesday afternoon, includes the name of Russell Tracy Crawford, who received a Bachelor of Science degree at the exercises.

May 3, 1901. A printed folio program with extra center page of the final examination of Russell Tracy Crawford for the degree of doctor of philosophy at UC/Berkeley gives the title and an abstract of Crawford's thesis: "Determination of the Constant of Refraction from observations made with the Repsold Meridian Circle of the Lick Observatory". The program also includes an outline of Crawford's studies, of his first minor subject (mathematics), and of his second minor subject (physics). In addition, it lists Crawford's previous employment as astronomy assistant at UC from 1897 to 1989 and as a fellow at the UC Lick Observatory from 1898 to 1901.
September 14, 1907. A printed 3 inch by 5 and 1/2 inch card announces a meeting of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific at Lick Observatory on Mt. Cushing, President, and R. T. Crawford, Secretary. Scientific/astronomical notes are handwritten in pencil on the reverse side.
March 28, 1908. A printed 3 inch by 5 and 1/2 inch card announces a meeting of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific at the California Club Hall, 1750 Clay Street, San Francisco at 8 p.m. The card is sent over the names of Charles S. Cushing, President, and R. T. Crawford, Secretary. Scientific/astronomical notes are handwritten in pencil on the reverse side.
August 7, 1939. Two typewritten copies of a 5-page article entitled "Contributions of the Students' Observatory (Berkeley Astronomical Department) to Astronomy" was written by R. T. Crawford. The article describes the development of the Students' Observatory on the UC/Berkeley campus, beginning with a $10,000 State appropriation in 1885. It states that the primary purpose of the Students' Observatory is instructional and research-oriented, particularly for doctoral students. Crawford ends by listing the research observatories, colleges and universities on whose staffs graduates of the Students' Observatory may be found. Both copies contain editing done by hand in pencil.
August 7, 1939. A carbon copy of a typewritten 3-page abstract of "Contributions of the Students' Observatory (Berkeley Astronomical Department) to Astronomy" was written by R. T. Crawford for the American Astronomical Society. (The longer version of the article is described above.) Inserted among the pages is a small lined sheet on which are listed the names of colleges and universities on whose staffs graduates of the Students' Observatory may be found.
May 9, 1957. A handwritten one-page letter from Adella Gay of 1500 Spruce Street, Berkeley, is addressed to "My dear friends". (The accompanying envelope, bearing a 3 stamp and postmarked in Berkeley on June 7, 1957, is addressed to Mrs. Tracy Crawford, 2740 Hillegas Avenue, Berkeley.) In her letter Adella Gay thanks the Crawfords for their letter and the picture in which she hardly can recognize "the dear little boy I knew". She says she knew Helen's father, Prof. Young, who baptized her, and his wife, the former Mrs. Glenn. She hopes the Crawfords will visit her soon.
August 28, 1957. A two-page handwritten letter from Adella Gay to "Dear Friends" is accompanied by a list of names she found in an Willows school record book from September 1887. She wonders whether Tracy might recognize some of them as classmates. In her letter, Adella Gay thanks them for their visit and for the picture. She reports that her nieces have come home from Europe with many pictures. Dorothy has returned to her school work, and Zula is overseeing the painting and roofing of the Sacramento house. (An unattributed pencilled notation on the list of Willows school classmates indicates that Dr. R. Tracy Crawford, Mrs. Scheeline's uncle, was a retired UC professor and head of the Astronomy Department.)
