The Carr Family

The history of the English speaking family of the Carrs and Kerrs is as old as the Norman conquest. One of the followers of William 1st, taken from a charter in Battle Abbey, bears the name of Karre. The early posterity of this Norman soldier, undoubtedly settled in the north of England, and succeeding generations spread on both sides of the border land of England and Scotland, and afterward into the north of Ireland.  The original name was modified by the English and Irish branches of the family, from the Norman- French Karre or Carre to the present name of Carr, which has been retained with but few exceptions ever since. The Scotch branch of the family had various ways of spelling the family name, but most generally either Karr, Kerr or Ker.

The Carr family history I am reporting here, is very interesting reading, especially the beginning.  But, some of it is suspect, as to how accurate it is.  In one report you will read that George Carr was the ship's carpenter on the Mayflower.  That seems to be untrue, according to the Mayflower experts.  No carpenter named George Carr was on the ship.  The information you will read in the report is mostly taken from a book on the Carr family, "The Carr Family Records", by Edson I. Carr.   His information may be documented in part, but much of it is surely tradition handed down in the Carr family.  But, it's a romantic story, and I like it, so I'm leaving it in the report.  The Carr's were Quakers (Society of Friends) so much of the story concerns their beliefs and closeness to other Friends.

Descendants of Thomas Carr

Generation No. 1

1. THOMAS1 CARR was born 1536, and died in London England. He married (2) <UNNAMED>. She was born 1539, and died in London, England.

Notes for THOMAS CARR: In the first centuries of the Norman rule in England, our family name took on various forms in writing, no doubt, largely due to the caprice of different members of the family, or the free and easy manner of writers in those days, who had very little regard for uniformity in such matters. From old documents we find that there were no less than ten different ways to express the name in writing, thus: Carre, Carr, Care, Car, Karre, Karr, Kar, Kerre, Kerr and Ker. Notwithstanding this marked difference in orthography, there was a general uniformity in the pronounciation of the name; the vowels a and e taking the quality of a in such words as far, mar, etc.

Just as various in writing the family name has been the colors of their arms and mottos. Although the original arms have always remained the same form olden times to the present--three mullets or etoiles on a chevron--the amplest play has been given to taste, fancy or ignorance of heroic patching with regard to colors. Also the crest, originally a hart's head, has in like manner been subjected to various changes. This distinguished family in its various branches possessed a great number of arms, many of them the author of this book has copied, but it would cost too much to produce them in this work.

The dificulty of tracing the early families of Carrs in England centuries back in a definite and concise manner, is exceedingly perplexing and attended with many failures and disappointments. The records of the earliest Carrs who settled in this country, date back three centuries, to four brothers who were born in London. Their names were Benjamin, William, George and James Carr. The descendants of these brothers, are given in the following pages of the Carr Family Records in as complete a manner as could be obtained. "THE CARR FAMILY RECORDS"

Child of THOMAS CARR is:

2. i. ROBERT2 CARR, b. May 16, 1542, Scotland; d. London, England.

Generation No. 2

2. ROBERT2 CARR (THOMAS1)1 was born May 16, 1542 in Scotland, and died in London, England. He married (2) UNKNOWN. She was born 1566.

Children of ROBERT CARR are:

3. i. WILLIAM3 CARR, b. June 17, 1597, London, England; d. June 04, 1672, Bristol, Rhode Island.

4. ii. GEORGE CARR, b. August 15, 1599; d. April 04, 1682, Salisbury, Massachusetts.

iii. JAMES CARR2, b. 1601; d. London, England.

Notes for JAMES CARR: He ran away from home when a boy and went to sea, and afterward became a sea captain. He was drowned while on a voyage from the West Indies to Boston. It is presumed that he had no family.

Child of ROBERT CARR and UNKNOWN is:

5. iv. BENJAMIN3 CARR, b. August 18, 1592, London, England; d. 1635, London, England.

Generation No. 3

3. WILLIAM3 CARR (ROBERT2, THOMAS1)3 was born June 17, 1597 in London, England, and died June 04, 1672 in Bristol, Rhode Island. He married SUSAN ROTHCHILD4 May 16, 1619 in London, England. She was born April 30, 1598 in Devonshire, England, and died May 03, 1671 in Bristol, RI.

Notes for WILLIAM CARR: They came to America in the fall of 1621, in the ship Fortune, Capt. Roger Williams, with thirty-five passengers on board. They landed at Plymouth, Nov. 7, 1621. They stayed the following winter in Plymouth, and on June 1, 1622, they started in a south-westerly direction through the trackless wilderness with an Indian for a guide, and after a journey on foot of forty-eight days, they located a home, July 18, 1622, where the town of Bristol, R. I., was afterward built. The town was laid out and named in 1636, by Roger Williams. William Carr died in Bristol, June 4, 1672, and his wife Susan died in the same place, May 3, 1671.

Notes for SUSAN ROTHCHILD: There is an old bible which has come down to the present generation in the line of William Carr, which is a rare old treasure. It was printed in London in 1585. On the first blank page of this ancient book, is written in a woman's hand the following valuable record: "My maiden name was Susan Rothchild. I was born in Devonshire, Eng., in the year of our Lord, A. D. 1598, April 30. I married William Carr, of London, May 16, 1619. He was born in 1597, June 17. Husband says he had a brother George Carr, who went to America in 1620. My husband has a brother Benjamin Carr, he was born Aug. 18, 1592. I am acquainted with him and his family. He has four sons, Robert Carr, born Oct. 4, 1614; Caleb Carr, born Dec. 9, 1616; Richard Carr, born Jan. 5, 1621; Andrew Carr, born Dec. 5, 1622. My son George Carr was born March 12, 1620. My husband had a brother James Carr. He ran away to sea when a boy and we never heard from him."

The following extract of historical interest, is taken from Mrs. William Carr's diary which is still preserved with the records of the family:
"It was a summer day in 1621, as I stood upon our ship's deck beside my husband with my infant son closely folded to my breast, while our noble captain, Roger Williams, stood by our side. I took a last view forever of my native isle, and forever bid it adieu, and all the scenes of my childhood home. My heart ached while bitter tears blinded my eyes. Never shall I forget the scenes of that day, as we took a last farewell of our friends with many promises that they would soon join us in America."

"Then the order was given by our captain to cast off our moorings, and our ship stood out in the Thames. After all sails were spread we took our course down the river. Each spot along its banks was dear to my soul, and while I was sad, the passengers, there being thirty-five, were singing and making merry that they were going to America. I could not join them for my heart was very sad."

"We had a pleasant sail down the Thames. Still I gazed upon my native isle with tearful eyes, and watched it when far out at sea, until the last receeding mountain vanished from my view. Our voyage was very pleasant for twenty days out to sea, and then we encountered a storm which lasted all the afternoon and following night. The weather was pleasant the rest of the way, and on the 6th day of November, 1621, the anchor was cast at dark some way out at sea for fear of unseen rocks."

"Next morning the boats were lowered and we landed, but what was my surprise! Lucinda, George Carr's wife, had died early in the spring before. My husband and George his brother and myself went to view her resting place. There with tearful eyes I viewed the last resting place of poor Lucinda Devenport, whom I had known in England. She had died in a foreign land of privation and cold, and was buried side by side with many others who had shared the same fate. My heart sank within me to think that I should never see Lucinda again. I had anticipated many happy hours with her, but my youthful hopes were forever blasted."

"We lived with brother George through the winter, living mostly on what game we caught. It was a cold, tedious winter with deep snow. Game was plenty such as deer and moose."

"On June 1, 1622, husband started south-west for a warmer climate, with a pocket compass and an Indian guide. Brother George went a two days' journey with us, and then returned home. I carried my son George in my arms and on my back through a dense forest settled only with wild beasts and Indians, but we met with few of the former and none of the latter. After being forty-eight days on our journey, July 18, husband concluded to stop and build a log cabin and to settle for life. In four days, husband, the Indian and myself, finished our log cabin, covering it with poles and peeled bark. My journey through the forest and the hard labor I had done in helping build our cabin, had its effect on me, I felt nearly worn out."

"I had left my rich parents and my only brother Robert in England, and had faced the storms and perils of the ocean with my noble companion, and had traveled with him fortyeight days through the forest. To my companion I had given my early love and pledged my hand for life. He was ever kind to me. We both belonged to the society of Friends."

"Before leaving England, father gave me œ100 in gold coin, my brother gave me two doubloons in gold. This gold coin I sewed into the wadding of my petticoat. Mother gave me her gold diamond ring which cost œ16. She took her gold watch from her pocket and gave it to me. It cost œ25. She also gave me her gold locket and the gold chain that she wore with her watch, and bade me keep them to remember her by. The locket cost œ10, and I lost it in my journey through the wilderness in coming here, but it was found by an Indian hunter in 1625, and returned to me. I had many happy days hunting deer with husband, as there was plenty of them in the forest, but I often thought of home and the dear ones there.

"Mr. William Codle joined us in 1628, with his wife, son and daughter from England. They belonged to the society of Friends."

"In 1635, Robert and Caleb Carr, husband's brother Benjamin Carr's two sons, were sent over from London to live with their uncle William, my husband. We had fine times hunting with the Indians, they were very friendly to us. Our bedding and clothing were nearly all skins and furs like the Indians, but in all these years I was mindful to educate my son George, although we were in a nameless wilderness."

"In 1636 Capt. Roger Williams, who had abandoned the sea, moved from Salem, bringing with him a colony of Friends, and settled with us, and set up a school free for all, young and old. The same year he bounded the state and called it Rhode Island, and named our place Bristol. He also surveyed and laid out towns and gave them names."

"A meeting was held at our cabin and we offered up our humble thanks to God, that we had met on this side of the ocean in a free land, beyond the persecution of Great Britain. How my heart thanked God that our noble captain who brought us safely across the ocean, had come to live with us, and preach and teach us to love God and to keep his commandments." THE CARR FAMILY RECORDS, pp. 9-12

Child of WILLIAM CARR and SUSAN ROTHCHILD is:

i. GEORGE4 CARR, b. March 12, 1619/20.

4. GEORGE3 CARR (ROBERT2, THOMAS1)5 was born August 15, 1599, and died April 04, 1682 in Salisbury, Massachusetts. He married (1) LUCINDA DAVENPORT in Salisbury, Massachuse. She died in Ipswich, MA. He married (2) ELIZABETH. She died May 06, 1691 in Salisbury, Massachussetts.

Notes for GEORGE CARR: He married Lucinda Devenport and came to America in 1620, on the Mayflower, as the ship's carpenter, bringing his young wife with him. He located with the pilgrims at Plymouth, and his wife was one of the unfortunate forty-one who died the following winter and early spring. A few years later he settled in Ipswich, and from there removed with the first settler of Cloechester, (Salisbury) Mass. He was granted an island in the Merrimac river for a home and the purposes of a shipyard, and it was called Carr's Island. The action of the town in relation to the grant of the island was as follows: "At a general meeting of the freemen of the town of Colechester, the 3rd day of the 5th month, 1640, it was ordered yt (that) George Carr shall have the island where he now dwells, as well as the marsh and upland, it being the greatest island within the town limits, in the Merrimack river, to him and to his heirs and assigns forever." Oct. 7, 1640, it was ordered by the General Court that "Colechester is henceforth to be called Salisbury."

The island was the home of the Carrs for a number of generations, and the possession of this island gave the family the monopoly of the ferrying business across the river in ye olden times. This ferry at George Carr's death was considered to be worth œ400. Two of the family were drowned while attending the ferry. The large house on Carr's Island was destroyed by fire, May 9, 1797.

6. ROBERT4 CARR (BENJAMIN3, ROBERT2, THOMAS1)9 was born October 04, 1614, and died 1681 in Newport RI.

Notes for ROBERT CARR: Came to America with his brother Caleb, on the ship Elizabeth Ann, commanded by Capt. Roger Cooper, which sailed from London, May 9, 1635. From an old shipping record in London, we find the following: "Calebb Carr, aged 19; and Robert Carr, aged 21, described as a 'tayler,' sailed for New England, on the 9th of May, 1635, in the Elizabeth Ann." These two brothers who were both minors, were sent to America after the death of their parents, to live with their uncle William, who had previously settled in Bristol, R. I. A few years later the two brothers settled in Newport, R. I. Robert Carr was admitted as an inhabitant in Portsmouth, Feb. 21, 1639, and a freeman in Newport, March 16, 1641. He was one of the original purchasers of the island of Conanicut in Narragansett bay, of the Indians, which contained about six thousand acres. He also acquired considerable property in Newport. His will was dated April 20, 1681, as he had determined on a voyage to New York and New Jersey. He died in 1681, and his will was proved, Oct. 4, 1681.

She was born 1630, and died September 12, 1675 in Newport RI. He married (2) SARAH CLARKE10, daughter of JEREMIAH CLARKE. She was born 1651, and died 1706. He married (3) ANN EASTON.

Notes for CALEB CARR: Buried twice; their bodies were moved from Newport to Jamestown. p8: "...he and his wife Mercy were both buried in Newport, RI, near where the Coddington School now stands. On 8 September 1900, the bodies of Caleb and Mercy Carr were disenterred and removed to the island of Jamestown where they still are. They lie in a small private cemetery and are properly marked with the stones that marked their graves in Newport. The inscription on his tombstone reads: "Here lieth interred the body of Caleb Carr, governor of this colony, who departed this life ye 17th day of December, 1695, in ye 73rd (79) year of his age." ...on 9 May 1635, the ship "Elizabeth and Ann" slipped her moorings and put out from London, England under the command of Roger Cooper Master; her destination was New England...On board were one hundred and two passengers bearing permission to emmigrate to the new world that lay on the western shore of their ocean.... Robert Carr, age 21 and Caleb Carr, age 11.... close associates of William Coddington who came from Boston, Lincolnshire, England as one of the original members of the Mass. Bay Company in 1629 and was a leading merchant in Boston, MA, during this period.....early in 1637 Mr. Coddington lead a group of people, because of religious differences, away from Boston. They went to Providence and conferred with Roger Williams as to settling in those parts. With Mr. Williams aid, the group quickly purchased from the Indians the large island of Aquidnick and immediately proceeded to the business of founding the town of Pocassit (later called Portsmouth). It is thought that the Carrs left Boston with this group. Certainly they were early at the Pocassit settlement for on 21 February 1638 Robert Carr was listed as an inhabitant. Early in 1639, a small group, with Mr. Coddington, removed to the south end of the island to lay out a new settlement leaving at Pocassit a goodly company to carry on. The name which they gave this new home has remained unchanged all these years: Newport...They quickly purchased from the Indians the sizable island of Conanicut (known now as Jamestown) and Robert and Caleb were among the ninety-eight original purchasers of the island. It is thought that neither of the brothers resided on the island. This move was left to their children....Caleb Carr took a very prominent part in the affairs of the settlement at Newport and in the Colony of Rhode Island. Among the offices in which he served were: Town Commissioner, Deputy, Justice, General Treasurer and Colonial Governor (in 1695 and terminated by his death late that same year)...Perhaps the thing that Caleb did that had the most lasting effect upon the family was his purchase of large tracts of land on the island of Conanicut/Jamestown, where several of his children took up their residence, and their descendants live there still...he also established a ferry between Newport and Jamestown, in 1675, spanning two hundred and fifity years associated with the Carr family...in the course of all these activities he became possessed of considerable wealth and his residence was on what is now Mill Street in Newport...he owned wharves and a warehouse at the foot of Mill Street where the ferry now docks...his Will disposed of human as well as real and personal property...his daughter Mary was without children but had a rather famous husband in Thomas Paine. He was a seafaring man and there is strong, evidence to prove that he was partner and intimate of the famous pirate, Captain Kidd..."

"...he was commissioner [of Newport] in 1654-62; was made a freeman in 1655; was deputy from 1664 through 1690...he was governor in 1695, the year in which he died...he bought at different times beginning with 1658, large interests in Conanicut and Dutch Islands...the Carrs as a family became conspicuous in the development of Jamestown and their fortunes have been more or less identified with that town and Newport from their settlement to the present time ..."

16. MARY7 ESTES (PATIENCE6 CARR, JOHN5, CALEB4, BENJAMIN3, ROBERT2, THOMAS1) was born September 29, 1743. She married NICHOLAS VARNEY, son of EBENEZER VARNEY and ELIZABETH HANSON. He was born February 21, 1738/39, and died November 28, 1764 in Falmouth, Cumberland ME.

Notes for NICHOLAS VARNEY: Stackpole's History of Durham: 'After living a few years in Falmouth he purchased, in 1782, lot No. 17 of Stephen Hart in Royalsborough. Hart's buildings had just been burned and Varney built his house on the hill southwest of John Varney's blacksmith-shop. The house is now occupied by his great-gradson, George E. Varney. He belonged to the Society of Friends and their rules prohibited any active part in war. They protested against all taxes, any part of which was to meet war expenses. Since it was impossible to discriminate in tax-bills what portion was for war, some of the Friends refused to pay any taxes at all. When the collector of Royalsborough called on Nicholas Varney, he persistently refused payment of the amount assessed upon him. Consequently the shiriff came and seized a new milch-cow, and sought also to take away her young calf with her. The boys, unterrified by the officer's badge and ignoring the spirit of the Quaker principle of non-resistance, mixed those calves up so that the officer was unable to decide which was the right one; and finding it difficult to catch and impossible to drive any one, he went away with the cow alone. The animal was sold, and the next time the officer came that way he brought the balance of the sale money remaining after the deduction of the tax-bill. Neither husband nor wife would touch the polluted currency, and the officer could relieve himself of the responsibility for the money only by laying it upon the high shelf at a corner of the room. There the money remained untouched for many months. When the next year the officer came round for another collection, his demand was met only by an allusion to what he had done the previous year and the statement that the money he had placed on the shelf then was still there. The officer found it so and withdrawing from it the amount required, returned the balance to its former position. It proved sufficient for the third year also.'

Children of MARY ESTES and NICHOLAS VARNEY are:

i. CARR8 VARNEY, b. July 22, 1773; m. ANNA TUTTLE.

He married (1) LYDIA BISHOP, daughter of JOHN BISHOP. She was born August 20, 1749, and died May 04, 1815. He married (2) EUNICE NICHOLS October 17, 1816, daughter of DAVID NICHOLS and PHEBE CHASE.

Notes for CALEB ESTES: By Caleb's first marriage there were eleven children. He was one of the founders of the Society of Friends in Durham. Caleb Estes lived in the two-story house west of the Friends meeting house. One day he moved back from the dinner table and said, 'I have breakfasted with you and dined with you, but I shall sup in my Father's kingdom,' and died immediately.'

Children of CALEB ESTES and LYDIA BISHOP are:

19. SARAH7 ESTES (PATIENCE6 CARR, JOHN5, CALEB4, BENJAMIN3, ROBERT2, THOMAS1)15 was born April 16, 1752 in North Yarmouth Maine, and died December 04, 1848 in West Gardiner, Maine. She married (1) SAMUEL CLOUGH15, son of JOHN CLOUGH. He was born 1752 in Brentwood NH, and died January 10, 1799. She married (2) JEDEDIAH HALL September 28, 1815 in Litchfield.

Notes for SARAH ESTES: Sarah Estes was born at North Yarmouth, Maine on April 16, 1752. In the "Records of the Woman's Monthly Meeting of friends for Herpswell and Falmouth" in the list of marriages from 1751 to 1790 on page 3, "at our Monthly Meeting held at Falmouth ye 23th of ye 3rd mo. 1772 the Preparative Meeting Cald upon their appeared for Falmouth Hope Winslow and Sarah Goddard on account from Herpswells whereas Sarah Cloof (Clough) has gone Contrary to the good orders used amongst friends on the account of her marring with one not of our Society and in so ding hath Denyd Membership with us Sarah Cloof hath sent in a paper to this meeting by nay of acknolegment friends refers it for further Consideration ." The date when Samuel and Sarah were married is not on record. Sarah's mother, Patience (Carr) was very prominent in the Quaker meetings. Samuel Clough died after making his will on Jan. 10. 1799. The Friends Records are stored in Portland. Maine. Since the names of the children are recorded in these ancient books, so faded that only with the aid of a magnifying glass can they be read, Samuel and Sarah must have been forgiven by the Society.

Notes for SAMUEL CLOUGH: Samuel Clough of Durham, Maine is reported to have come there from Berwick, Maine, a town where he met Quakers who were moving from Massachusetts to the vicinity of Yarmouth, Maine. Since his brother, Amos, possibly another brother, Richard, and their Welch relatives were already in North Yarmouth, there is reason to believe that Samuel of Brentwood went to Durham, Maine. Evidently a former group of Quakers had already occupied farms in the vicinity of Durham, including North Yarmouth because the girl whom Samuel married was born in that. Doubtless Samuel visited his relatives there and met Sarah Estes. A Samuel Clough came from Berwick, Maine to Durham, Maine in the second group of settlers who were Quakers. Samuel and Edward Estes bought land in Durham then called Royalsborough, on June 10, 1771, lot 16 was owned by Samuel and lot I j by Joseph Estes, the brother of the girl whom Samuel married. Samuel did not live to see his family grow to maturity, and he died at the age 47 years. His sons became men of whom he would have had reason to be proud and his descendants in later generations became distinguished citizens.
