STATEMENT

My work is an intuitive inner reaction to the outer worlds of politics, spirituality, cultural and environmental interdependence. I am interested in the part of the mind that floats between the exterior world and the interior world. The edge, that is fearful and isolated, but also sings in the morning, with strange flying birds and peculiar flower people.  My friend Di talks about Grandfather Rock and Grandmother Earth that is it seems to me a better way of viewing the environment as one of my relations. This wedding of the internal and external worlds does not require escape but engagement. War is not good and to go to war wantonly is evil. If we are indeed,” All in this together”, we need to stand in the world for community and peace. Peace allows for contemplation, invention, story telling, and wonder. This I know seems obvious but people in power are missing it.

I am a lesbian and I am not sure what that means to my work, but certainly the death of my life partner of bone cancer in 2003 has informed the paintings you see here. We were living in rural NM after moving there from LA and now I find myself in the small city of Modesto, CA.

I was born on a rented farm in Butler Co., Kansas in 1939, in a house without electricity or running water. I “came out” in 1960 and when the University published a Homosexual story I had written.  I didn’t know about all that secrecy because I was very naive. Some viewers my see my work as naive today, but as an artist, I remember every thing changes so I just do what is in my mind to paint.
