| BIO An Easterner by birth, Helen moved to Berkeley, CA in 1971 to marry John Burke, a Physics Professor at SF State University, who she met through Sierra Club activities. In Berkeley she continued as a full-time Sierra Club activist and in 1974 was elected as the first woman and environmentalist to the East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) Board. She served four terms, the last two of which without opposition, from 1974-1990. In 1983 Helen went to work as a community relations coordinator for toxic waste sites and later lead-based paint disclosure enforcement for the federal Environmental Protection Agency, Region 9. She worked there until 2003 when she retired. Long interested in art, drawing and painting from time to time, she started taking watercolor and pen-and-ink classes and continues to continues to develop and expand her talent. ARTISTIC STATEMENT I see art as an opportunity to see the things I love in the natural world -- a beautful wild thing like an owl; a lovely glowing sunset; or a magnificent waterfall in Yosemite Valley--in a new way, one which deepens and expands my appreciation of what I'm seeing. I seek to tap into my deeper emotions in order to communicate that joy and excitement to others. |
