Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) uses the YELLOW category in its fish consumption advisory to designate those fish that can be eaten once per week. These include popular salt water fish such as Orange Roughy, Grouper, Canned Albacore Tuna and Lobster. In "Recipes for Catch and Release" we did not add any local fish to this category because the Pennsylvania and New York 2006 Fish Consumption Advisories do not have a parallel category with less limited restrictions on consumption. The Advisory suggests a general, statewide one meal per week limit for all citizens to contain exposure to contaminants. People who regularly eat sport fish, women of childbearing age and children are particularly at risk and should be especially careful to space fish meals out. One meal is assumed to be one-half pound of fish (weight before cooking) for a 150-pound person. Smaller people should eat smaller portions. The contaminants add up, so if you eat from a category with a one portion per month limit, you should not eat any fish from any category for a full month!
