The Yankee Network
....a thumbnail history....
1920s:
The Shepard Stores puts WNAC on the air. In the course of several years, it adds several other Boston area stations, and creates The Yankee Network to feed programming to the stations.
1943:
Shepard sells The Yankee Network, Inc. to General Tire & Rubber Company. Yankee would serve as the starting point for the creation of General Tire's broadcasting division, which would eventually be known as RKO General.
1969:
The Yankee Network transmits its last program under the Yankee banner.
1992:
Under orders from the FCC, RKO General divests itself of its final stations, including the former WNAC, then WRKO-AM 680. RKO General passes from the scene.
