Vista and Viiv - Coopetition at work

ViiV and Vista, along with other familiar Microsoft terms like PlaysForSure, and DRM schemes will cooperate, compete, and overlap to create the environment for Digital Media use...

Alot of mystery still surrounds what exactly are Vista and ViiV.

ViiV is Intel's initiative in hardware specifications for Digital Media.

A variety of specifications are set for PCs by ViiV:

ViiV Technology Page            Product Spec (PDF)

ViiV starts with a Dual Core Intel processor. In addition to the Core2 Duos now being pushed, "Other Intel® dual-core processors include the Intel® Core™2 Extreme processor, Intel® Core™ Duo processor, Intel® Pentium® D processor, and Intel® Pentium® processor Extreme."

In the Home Network, ViiV represents a plug and play initiative to make connecting network components as easy as USB peripherals.

Intel® Hub Connect Technology

Simplified device setup. For real.

Helps with the setup of a growing number of Intel Viiv technology verified devices on the network.

One advantage of the ViiV scheme is access to major sources of high value content because the contractual relationships are created already by Intel or third party ViiV participants...

Access to a growing number of verified services

Entertainment at your fingertips.

Access to an expanding list of entertainment options like movies, music, and TV programs delivered through the Internet that you can control, personalize and enjoy.

And a little DRM related warning...

¹ Home networking requires additional devices, software or services. Ability to share some content is limited; subject to authorization from the content owner or service provider and network device capability. Verified devices and services will vary; check for desired features/functionality.

TiVo and Intel Working Together on Digital Home Initiatives

After announcing in the Fall of 2005 that it was working on supporting Intel's ViiV, little has been said by TiVo. It looks like that initiative has fallen by the wayside.
