Services Offered
The animal disease
diagnostic laboratory accepts samples from county residents, and
private veterinarians, as well as from public agencies. Fees tend to be
nominal, since the primary focus is the detection of diseases that are
infectious to other animals as well as those transmissible to humans.
However, complete pathology and necropsy (animal autopsy)
services are offered.

Long standing
benign mixed mammary tumor
When Dr. Quortrup was appointed County Veterinarian and laboratory
director (January 1, 1949) he brought
considerable laboratory expertise with him, and was an excellent
histopathologist. Prior to that time the only tumor or cancer diagnosis
available for animals was that provided by M.D. pathologists, but this
was not
permitted under the medical practice acts. However, there was no
alternative available. To fill this gap Dr. Quortrup started to provide
this function, a valuable and much needed service to the local
veterinarians and the residents of the county. Animal cancers behave
differently from their counterparts in human medicine, often depending
on the site and species, and even the breed involved.
