The Cantor stated that during the Hebrew month of Elul we have the opportunity to reflect and prepare for Rosh Hashanah and
Yom Kippur through music, listening to the live sound of the shofar, prayer, and family holiday recipes and traditions. Another
way to reflect and stimulate new thoughts about family and self is through literature. Our PJC library has many books to
enhance this chance for reflection during the month of Elul.
I had the occasion to hear Rabbi Abraham J. Twerski, M.D., speak in person and was awed by his presence and presentation.
Rabbi Twerski is the founder of the Gateway Rehab Center in Aliquippa for drugs and alcohol. He no longer lives in our area
but his books continue to influence people worldwide. I hope you will avail yourself to one of the following books to augment
this personal time of reflection:
1. Angels Don't Leave Footprints - Discovering What's Right with Yourself
2. It's Not As Tough As You Think - How to Smooth Out Life's Bumps
3. It's Not As Tough As You Think - Making Family Life Smoother and Better
4. I'd Like to Call for Help, But I Don't Know the Number - the Search for Spirituality in Everyday Life
5. Life's Too Short!! - Pull the Plug on Self-Defeating Behavior and Turn on the Power of Self-Esteem
6. Do Unto Others - How Good Deeds Can Change Your Life
7. Dearer Than Life - Making Your Life More Meaningful
We have several other books that can also aid in personal reflection:
1. Words That Hurt, Words That Heal - How to Choose Words Wisely and Well, by Rabbi Joseph Telushkin
2. Days of Awe - A Treasury of Jewish Wisdom for Reflection, Repentance, and Renewal on the High Holy Days, edited by
S.Y. Agnon (winner of the Nobel Prize in literature!)
3. The Jewish Women's Book of Wisdom - Thoughts from Prominent Jewish Women on Spirituality, Identity, Sisterhood, Family
and Health
The above books will be on the shelf marker "New Books." This shelf is located by the Cantor's office. Please
watch the Scribe for additional articles about "new books" in the library,
See you in the library,
Betty Ann
Don't forget to sign the card in the back of the book and place it in the container on the desk. This would also be a good
time to look for other books you might have borrowed from the library and need to return. There is a crate for these books.

The library is open:
daily, Monday -Friday when our Office Administrator, Gail Levine, is in her office which is 9:00 a.m.---1:00 p.m.
during Hebrew or Sunday school hours., and
any time the synagogue is open. So books can be dropped off even when attending a service.
We have several comfortable chairs to utilize while you make your selections. Again there is a aqua colored box on my
desk to place the library card for your selected reading material.
Below, there is a second list of what's new in the library. The list of books could go on and on. So please use our Jewish
library and remember to return books borrowed.
See you in the library,
Betty Ann
