DRAKE
Ancestors & Descendants of Fielding Boone DRAKE

Searching recent records has led me to believe William Drake is the father of my Fielding Drake. Nothing has been proven yet. Here are some items showing that possibility:

1790 Census - Drakes and Dingmans live near each other in Lower Smithfield, Northampton, PA

1800 Census - A William Drake and James Dingman both live in Lower Smithfield (later becomes part of Monroe Co), Northampton, PA (1880 Kos Co. IN census for Fielding Drake shows his parents born in PA-which led me to look in PA)

1810 Census - Drakes and Dingmans live right next to each other, Lower Smithfield, Northampton, PA

1820 US Census for Shelby Co. OH shows 2 William Drake families. One shows 1 male and 1 female 45 or over 2 youngsters, 1 person not a naturalized citizen; the second: 1 male 20-45, 1 female 27-45 and 5 youngsters, one person not a naturalized citizen. These are the only Drakes in the county. Drakes and Dingmans no longer in Northampton Co. PA.

Newly found cousin: Janet Glidden, Monrovia, IN has some data that perhaps leads in the same direction: 1820 and 1824 Tax reocrds for Shelby Co. OH show a William Drake and a Daniel and Abraham Dingman owning a business together. The 1824 list shows a James Dingman and Abraham Dingman and William Drake in both Orange and Perry Twp's in Shelby Co.

William Drake bought his land from James Dingman in Shelby Co., OH. Confirmation of sale and estate records confirm this from FHL/Salt Lake - May, 2001

1830 Census-Clinton Twp (Sidney), Shelby Co. OH shows Elizabeth Drake head of house, and 6 children living there. None showing foreign. second: William Drake and 1 female btwn 50-60 in town of Orange.

1840 Census-Clinton Twp, Shelby Co., OH shows Elizabeth Drake head of house, and 8 others living there - 3 adult males and 2 adult females, 4 working in agriculture. Daniel Dingman lives nearby. None of this is verified as Fielding's parents, but ages seem fit.

OH Wills & Estates 1825-1869-SLC Film has info on Wm. Drake estate, Shelby Co. OH, May 31.

1850-Fielding Drake had land in Sidney, Shelby Co. OH. 7E, 7S, 20 NE 1/2 NW qr., 40, 360,80,440 added to land, unk land record.

Found Record in Shelby Co. OH: An Effie Drake married Abraham Goble. Her parents are listed as William Drake and Elizabeth Dingman Drake. She and Mr. Goble move to Koscuisko Co., IN.

Known and verified information on my family line:

1. FIELDING B. DRAKE was born Abt. 1824 Shelby Co. OH, and died July 03, 1899 in Leesburg, Koscuisko, IN.Occupation: Boot and shoemaker.  He married JANE (&OR) ELIZABETH HARTMAN September 12, 1848 in Sidney, Shelby, Co., OH.

1840: Unable to locate in census

1850: The 1850 census shows that Fielding was 25 years old (born in 1825?) and his wife Jane was 22 years. They lived in Sidney Township, Shelby Co., Ohio. His occupation was listed as a "Shoemaker" and they had 1 child, Mary E., just 4 months old. Living with them was his (brother?), William, 21 years, Harvey Libner, 21 years, from Ohio and Thomas Clegg 21 years from England. All three young men were listed as shoemakers also and may have worked for Fielding Drake. Fielding has OH as his birthplace, unk which county.

1850-1860, Moved from Sidney OH to Koskuicko Co., IN

1860: The 1860 Census has Fielding now living with his growing family in Oswego Villa (poss. village), Kosciusko County, Indiana. Oddly, the census lists him now 39 years old and Jane as 32. It also shows them having 4 children; Mary 8, Catherine 10, Florence 5 and Daniel 1. It appears that they just reversed the ages for Mary and Catherine. The 2 younger children were born after they arrived in Indiana so they must have lived there for at lease 5 years by 1860. Fielding is still in the same business only now listed as a "Boot and Shoemaker".

1870: Found in Kosciusko Co. IN

1880: Found in Kosciusko Co. IN
Census shows Fielding as a widower. b. OH, Father b. PA, Mother b. PA. His children show their Mother (Jane E. Hartman Drake) b. PA

Notes for FREDDIE EARL STARR:
Erma Wilkinson Barber writes:
Fred had a wife named Glada. Both of their children were retarded and Phillip was institutionalized. However, Roberta was constantly tutored and given special training and was eventually about to get a job in a factory. She remained single until her mother died and she married to everyone's surprise. I think she was just "Slow" and she was never allowed out of her mother's sight. Erma saw her in the late 1980's and she was still happily married although ailing. She had arthritis very bad. She and her husband had remained in her mother's house which was near aunt Lil't in Ligonier, IN.

3. FRANCES ANNA ALICE 2 DRAKE (FIELDING B.1) was born November 29, 1866 in Oswego, IN, and died October 09, 1921 in Los Angeles, CA. She married (1) UNION UNIE CLARK in Elkhart, IN. She married (2) CHARLES (CHARLEY) C. WILKINSON March 13, 1884 in Elkhart, IN, son of WILLIAM WILKINSON and ELIZABETH MCLINTIC.

Notes for FRANCES ANNA ALICE DRAKE:
After Frances was divorced from Charley Wilkinson she ran a boarding house in Elkhart. My dad's cousins say that their mother Ethel told them that she was a very vain woman. She dressed immaculately and always wanted her girls to brush her hair for her. They also expressed a sadness that she didn't pay much attention to them or dress them well when they were small. Ethel relates that she was always sending them out of he house during the day which made them feel abandoned.

Later after she married Pockie (Uni Clark) they came to live in Los Angeles with Aunt Ethel Wilkinson (Shaw) and Grandma Ilah Wilkinson (Weiser). Might have been born in Concord TWP, Elkhart, IN

Notes for ILAH MAY WILKINSON:
My grandmother was the sweetest person I ever knew. She never had a cross word to say. She would be in the kitchen for hours making homemade dishes such as noodles (from scratch) and dumplings, pies, and pickled eggs and beets. She had an old treadle Singer sewing machine. She and my grandfather always enjoyed sitting in their huge oak rocking chairs that my grandfather made and visiting with all of us.

The papers that Harry and Ilah filled out for their cemetary plots indicate that Ilah was born in Leesburg, IN. She was of Protestant faith.

Notes for FIELDING BOONE WILKINSON:
Erma says that she and her brother Robert were not very close, although after their dad (Fielding Boone Wilkinson) died, they did become closer and that their family was not a very loving/touching family. He lived most of the time in Chicago, IL working on the railroad while the rest of the family lived in Elkhart. Their mother worked and Erma looked after Robert. Robert married 5 times. Erma says that some relative had told her that our Grandmother Frances Anna Alice Drake was related to Sir Francis Drake....Rumor or fact?
