How Ehrlichia Affects Your Dog
- Seizures, mental confusion & dullness, obsessive or repetitive behaviors
- Eyes may be bloodshot, irritated or have glassy appearance
- Long-nosed breeds may bleed from the nose
- Hypersensitive to sound & touch. May have secondary ear infection
- Lung infection, tonsillitis and coughing are common signs
- Excessive thirst and urination, secondary cystitis are common
- Arching of back - causes may include secondary spinal infection, abdominal discomfort, pain in kidneys, etc
- Faded coat color, grayish cast
- Males may have secondary prostate infection, sterility
- Loss of muscle mass
- Diarrhea, sometimes containing blood. More common in E. risticii infection
- Ulcer-like symptoms, loss of appetite, erratic vomiting (often of bile only)
- Bitches may have secondary uterine infection, prolonged heat cycles, absence of heat cycles, fetal absorption, fading puppies
Acute infection is usually more dramatic. Symptoms was & wane in chronic infections.
Usually have more than one symptom. Affected signs may be very subtle, especially in stoic dogs.
