Rosmarinus officinalis
"Tuscan Blue"Like many herbs, Rosemary is a native of the Mediterranean region and therefore can tolerate heat and drought once established.
It's name means "dew of the sea" and is one of the most ancient of herbs and holds an important place in the history and folklore of mankind.
An herb of purification and health, it has been known as both the emblem of fidelity as well as the Herb of Remembrance making it a ceremonial herb in both weddings and funerals.
Through the centuries Rosemary has been used to cure headaches and gout, stimulate the appetite, purify the air, repel moths, and protect people from the Black Death. It was also believed if Rosemary leaves were placed under one's bed, "thou shalt be delivered of all evill dreames."
In cooking, Rosemary has long been paired with beef and lamb, and adds much to hardy soups and stews. It is also a wonderful compliment to potatoes.
