Plymouth, England was the birthplace of my grandmother, Doris Duggua, and her home until she came to the States at the age of eighteen. She would sometimes speak of going to Plymouth Hoe as a young girl to play or to stroll the Promenade.
The Hoe is the name given a long stretch of waterfront overlooking the harbour. One of the main features there is Eddystone Lighthouse, or Smeaton's Tower, which once stood 14 miles offshore on Eddystone Rocks. In 1882, after 123 years of service, it was moved to the mainland where it remains today as a tribute to it's builder, John Smeaton.
