[Comments to my son in a letter]

Hart beat Saugus in a surprisingly close game 21-14.

Hart has not really looked very good the last few weeks. The Indians are VERY vulnerable to rushing between the tackles. The Saugus running back gained about 170 yards, Manuel White from Valencia had 225. Canyon did about the same but abandoned the tactic in favor of passing (a big mistake). Loyola won doing it.

On offense, Saugus simply pounded it, almost every play, right into the middle of the line. The Hart defensive tackles are puny (they are both about 150 pounds.) and Saugus has some big hogs in the center of the offensive line. It made Scott Hunt, the Hart MLB, look very good as he ended up getting an enormous number of tackles. We were visitors and the Saugus announcer sounded like a recording "run by Stoddard [the Saugus running back], tackle by Hunt" over and over again. Stoddard ended up with 190 yards on 30 carries.

A couple of calls (which the Saugus fans were justifiably irate over) could have easily change the outcome.

David Neill, the Hart quarterback, was taken to the hospital at halftime. He completed 10 of 18 for 187 yards and 1 TD in the first half. He got smacked with a helmet beneath his rib cage. Hopefully, he'll be all right.

Actually, the second string quarterback, Kyle Boller, has the better arm and may see the field a little better, but Neill is substantially faster. Neill is also a very good punter, probably the best I've seen at Hart (if he worked just on punting, he could probably get a scholarship just for that). He's also a pretty decent free safety and/or linebacker. Hopefully, he'll be back Friday.
