This was less than a memorable game.
Hart was wholly dominant in virtually every facet of the game from scoring (52-0) to rushing (183 to 44) to passing (309
to 38). The Indians scored a TD on the first six possessions (5 in the first half and the first one of the second half).
Norton finished 13 of 16 for 286 yards with 2 TDs passing and 2 rushing. Two of his incomplete passes were sure touchdowns
that were dropped (Hart scored moments later on both drives).
There were some standout plays on defense: Defensive end Eric Wilson had 3 sacks; middle linebacker Brian Elledge had
a sack and returned an interception for a TD.
Backup running back Dan Howell had 109 yards rushing on 6 carries, including a 45-yd scoring run.
The only moments of suspense involved, what else, the punting game, a chronic source of heartburn for Hart. Kevin Ciccone
was back fielding punts and dropped one in each half, and El Toro recovered both times. The Charger offense was wholly unable
to capitalize on either turnover, throwing an interception a couple of plays after the first fumble half and punting it away
(again -- a total of 12 punts in the game!) following the second.
Here is the scoring summary:
Hart started somewhat slowly only because El Toro had the ball first. On Sean Norton capped off Hart's first possession
with a 12-yard touchdown run at 6:19. Hart 7-0.
Hart got the ball back following a punt and scored on a 38-yard pass to Cody Kase. Hart 14-0 at 2:37.
In the second quarter, Lafferty (the short yardage "double tackle" running back) had a 1-yard run. Hart 21-0
at 8:32.
Four minutes later -- following another punt, Ryan Wolfe scored on a 63-yard pass. Hart 28-0 at 4:46.
A minute and a half later, middle linebacker Elledge intercepted a pass and returned it 20 yards for a TD. Hart 35-0 at
3:13. El Toro managed to run out the clock with no further damage.
Hart took the opening kickoff in the second half and Norton scored on an 11-yard run. Hart 42-0 at 9:27.
Thereafter the backups were in and Dan Howell scored on a 45-yard. Hart 49-0 at 3:31.
Hart's final score was a 27-yard field goal by Will Simons with 6:59 left in the game. Hart 52-0.
I suspect the 12 punts by El Toro was some sort of record. I do not recall ever seeing that many punts before but El Toro
had little choice as they were completely buried in their own territory the whole game.
