2003-Saugus

Like the Burroughs game on Monday, I was not in attendance. We were in Rio Cuarto, Argentina. Once again, I rely on DRinSCV, master stat man, for the report:

Easy Win For Hart

Sean Norton passed for 304 yds and 4 TDs, and Daniel Howell rushed for 101 yds and 2 TDs to lead Hart (6-3, 4-0 in Foothill League) to an easy win over visiting Saugus (2-7, 0-4) at College of the Canyons November 7th. The win clinches a 23rd consecutive winning season for Hart, and puts them in position to claim their 12th consecutive Foothill League crown with a win over rival Valencia next week.

Norton connected with Kevin Ciccone on Hart's second offensive play from scrimmage to give the Indians a lead less than 3 minutes into the game. Ciccone would finish with 181 yds on 9 catches, including 2 TDs, and kick 6 extra points in the game. Hart expanded their lead on three TDs scored by Howell, including one on a pass from Norton. Howell's 48-yd run early in the second quarter marked Hart's 4th score on 4 possessions and gave Hart a 28-0 lead.

Saugus had a pair of opportunities to score in the first half following Hart turnovers. First, Ryan Purdy recovered a Ciccone punt muff, and later Anthony Montero intercepted a Norton pass. Both times Saugus got the ball in Hart territory, but both times the Indian defense shut the door. Then Norton combined with Evan Surratt on a 44-yd pass with 1:27 left before halftime to make it 35-0 at the break. Strangely, Saugus held a dramatic edge in time of possession in the first half, holding the ball for 17:01 to just 6:59 for Hart. However, that just illustrated how quickly Hart scored once it got the ball. The 5 Hart scoring drives took a combined 17 plays.

Hart took the second half kickoff and drove down the field. The drive ended at the Saugus 15 when Norton was sacked by Douglas Hudson on 4th and goal, but it chewed up 7:01 off the clock, preventing Saugus from entertaining any thoughts of getting back in the game. Following a short Saugus punt, Hart got the ball at the Centurion 43. Two plays later, Norton combined with Ciccone on a 44-yd TD pass to make it 42-0 Hart.

Saugus got its only score of the game with 5:11 left. QB Travis Babin scored on a 2-yd run to cap an 18-play, 74 yd drive that was kept alive on a fake punt play on which Babin threw a pass to Zachary Shafer for a first down. Babin also ran the ball in for the 2-point conversion, making it 42-8 and closing the night's scoring.

On the night, Norton finished 18 of 23 for 304 yds and 4 TDs. Ciccone had a huge game with 9 catches for 181 yds and 2 TDs, and also kicked 6 extra points. Howell rushed for 101 yds and 2 TDs on just 9 carries. And the defense racked up 8 sacks, including 2-1/2 by DE Patrick Curtis.

For Saugus, Babin finished 12 of 29 passing for 129 yds and no interceptions. However, Saugus' longest play of the night went for just 18 yds and the Centurions totaled just 178 yds of offense. Montero led Saugus rushers with 27 yds on 8 carries, and also had the interception on defense.
