Hart Dad
2003-Loyola
Home

Here's the summary.

Loyola took the opening kickoff and started at the 28. Eight plays later the Cubs scored, the big play being a 3rd down pass for 31 yards. The TD was on a 9-yard pass and it was 7-0 Cubs.

Hart started at the 40 on a nice return by Ciccone and scored on an 11-play drive ending with a 6-yard pass to Howell (only one play as much as 10 yards). 7-7 with 2:36 left in the first quarter.

Hart shut down the Cubbies for the rest of the half, giving ups some yards in the middle of the field but not when it counted (the next Loyola series was 7 and punt).

Hart scored on the next possession on a 7-play, 80-yard drive. The big plays were a 30-yard pass to Ciccone and a 22-yard run by Howell. The TD was on a 6-yard run by Howell. The PAT was wide right. 13-7 Hart.

Hart shut down the Cubs again on a 6 and out. Hart started at the 25 after the punt. Hart scored on a 5-play 75-drive, the big play being a 43-yard pass to Surratt. Ciccone scored on a 12-yard pass. 20-7 Hart. Loyola had 2 more possessions before half (five and out, and 4 and out). Hart had one additional possession but went 3 and out.

At half, Norton was 9 of 13 for 128 yards and 2 TDs. Howell had 9 carries for 69 yards and two receptions for 13 yards and scored twice. Deke of Loyola was 6 of 12 and 92 yards and 1 TD. However, after the first drive, he was only 3 for 9. Loyola had 17 carries for 55 yards in the first half but again, after the first series was 12 carries for minus 3 yards including 2 sacks. As I said, the Hart D really shut 'em down.

Second half: Lots of 3/4 and outs and turnovers in the second half. Hart 3 and out. Loyola 1 and then an INT. Hart 4 and out on downs. Loyola 4 and out. Hart finally started moving and went on a 12-play with 32-yard field goal. Hart 23-7 with 1:23 left in the third.

Loyola had a nice drive that ended on downs at the 5 (actually the10) when Deke fell on fourth down.

Hart ran two plays then Norton threw an INT (into triple coverage) which was returned to the 7. Loyola scored on 3rd down to make it 23-13 at 6:11 left in the game (the 2-point conversion missed)

Hart started at the 20 and on second down, Howell fumbled and Loyola got it at the 19. The Cubs went nowhere and settled for a 34-yard FG at 5:08. Hart 23-16.

Loyola kicked it to the endzone (no onsides attempt) and Hart went: pass to Howell for 3, inc, -- a HUGE play -- pass to Leigh for 31 and the first down; run for 6, run for 4 (first down), run for 4, run for 1, OFFSIDES (first down), run for 3, run for 3 OFFSIDES (first down) and Hart ran out the clock.

The second half was not much offense for anybody. Norton was 5 of 11 for 69 yards and 1 INT. Howell ran for 53 yards on 18 carries and had a reception for 3. Ciccone had 7 receptions for the game for 92 yards. He had a TD and also an interception.

In the second half, Deke was 4 for 11 for 46 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT . Loyola had 11 carries for 53 yards but more than half of that was on one run of 28 yards.

Comments: Hart, after the first Loyola drive, really dominated the first half, scoring 20 consecutive points and shutting down the Loyola offense almost completely.

Hart's offense really misfired in the second half. The Indians went three and out on the first drive. Following a Ciccone interception and nice return, Hart started at the Loyola 23 and then really got nothing much on the run. Hart went for it on 4th and 1 and came up short. Hart finally started moving the ball the third series but hung up at the 15 after a 2-yard run by Howell and 2 Incs forced a FG. Hart's fourth series was 2 nothing runs and then an INT. Normally, Norton makes exceptionally good choices but it seemed like he was fixating on Ciccone in the second half. Hart started that series at the 11 and Norton threw an ill-considered pass right into triple coverage and Loyola got a great interception return to the 7. The next series Howell fumbled and gave Loyola another score, this time a field goal.

Hart's defense was really very decent in the second half but the 2 turnovers really hurt. The killer plays for Loyola were letting Hart escape on a third and long late in the fourth on the pass to Leigh and then getting to offside calls on third down. I noted that Grady pulled the kid responsible on the second time.

The Hart O-line provided great protection with no sacks. Once again, the shotgun formation proved to be pretty ineffective for the run, particularly in the second half when Hart netted about 20 yards on 12 plays. The pitch play from the shotgun is becoming obvious to most linebackers and while Howell is reasonably fast once he gets rolling, he does not have the kind of acceleration that allows him to turn the corner. The improvement in the overall defensive play bodes well.

Next week: Burbank.
