Hart got thumped.
The big difference: the domination of the MV lines on both sides of the ball. The first quarter kind of set the tone.
MV ran 26 plays (including penalties, punts, etc). Hart ran TWO (of course one of those was a long TD pass). Hart had the
ball less than 30 SECONDS in the entire first quarter but led, 7-0. While the disparity in time of possession was not nearly
so great in the second quarter, Hart had no first downs and Mission scored four times, 3 times in the last 4 minutes, seemingly
wearing out the Hart defense. Hart had a couple of bright spots in the fourth quarter with a 73-yard run by Bright to start
out the quarter and a TD pass to Wolfe late. With that offensive line, combined with Moline, Sanchez and Reuland, MV will
be very tough to beat.
Here's the play by play:
Hart won the toss and deferred. Mission got about a 14-yard return to the 18: run by Moline for 4, pass to Reuland for
12, run by Moline for 6, run for 3 by Gogerty; run for 3 by Moline; run for 5 by Moline, run for 1 by Moline on a draw (when
the big boys weren't out leading the play), PENALTY for holding following a 15-yard run by the QB on third and long for a
net -5, pass for 6 and punt from the Hart 47.
The punt went into the endzone and Hart started at the 20: From under center, the first play was a 6-yard run by Najee
Bright with an additional 15 yards tacked on for roughing Hart's center and/or the QB [the tone for the night was set here:
Lyon got smacked on almost every play]. The second play (from the Hart 41) was a double pass: Lyon to Wolfe -- and everyone
on MV bit and went after Wolfe who passed to a wide open Evan Surratt for the 59-yard TD. Hart 7-0 at 6:32.
The Hart score can be seen about 1:00 into this video clip
MV started at the 20: run by Moline for 8, run by Moline for 4, pass for 5 with a FUMBLE at the end of the play but recovered
by MV (another big story as the night progressed), penalty for holding -10, incomplete, and then on third and long (the story
of the entire season), Sanchez FUMBLED the snap, was flushed and ran for 16 yards and a first down, run by Gogerty for 3,
incomplete, pass to Reuland for 11 (on another third and long), run by Moline for 8, PENALTY clipping -15, pass to Reuland
for 6, and on another third and long, Sanchez was flushed and ran for 19, run by Moline for 4, incomplete on a long throw
to the endzone on a nice breakup by Meza; run by QB for 1 [END of QUARTER] and incomplete on fourth down on a tip by Bubba
Hetman.
At this point things looked pretty good for Hart. The Indians were up 7-0, despite having the ball for only two plays.
The defense had forced a punt and then held on fourth down on the two MV possessions. However, MV had the ball for over 11:30
and ran 26 plays to Hart's two in the first quarter and it became clear that the Hart defensive front seven was going to have
a tough time maintaining that level of proficiency if they had to spend that much time on the field.
Hart started at the 26: From under center, Bright run for -2, run by Bright for 10 on a pitch to the right, incomplete
and punt (almost a problem because of a poor snap).
MV started at the MV 37: Pass to Reuland for 11, run by Moline for 10, run by Moline for 6, run by Moline for 4 and on
third and short, run by Moline FUMBLE (forward) and recovered once again by MV for a 7-yard gain; run by Moline for 5, incomplete,
run by Moline FUMBLE but recovered by MV for no gain, then on fourth down and 5 at the Hart 20, Sanchez was once again flushed
and ran for 15; run by Moline for 5 and the TD. 7-7 at 7:18 of the second quarter.
Hart at the 17 following a 14-yard return by Wheeler: incomplete (a nice reaction to the blitz -- a long pass down the
side line on about a 1-step drop with a nice catch by Surratt but, unfortunately out of bounds); incomplete, incomplete and
punt.
MV at Hart 44 (at 6:45 on the clock; Hart had the ball for less than 30 seconds on offense): pass to Reuland for 27, run
by Moline for 4, run by Moline for 3, incomplete, run by Moline for 5, run by Moline for 5 and the TD. MV went for 2 and it
was 15-7 at 4:25.
Hart at the 17 on a 17-yard return by Wheeler: pass to Wolfe for 2, incomplete, incomplete and punt (Hart had the ball
for 1:07).
MV at the Hart 47: a 27-yard run by Moline but he got a facemask penalty stiff-arming the tackler which took 15 yards
off the end of the run; run by Moline for 22, run by Moline for 3, penalty against Hart for defensive holding moved the ball
to the five and then run by Moline for 5 and the TD. MV 22-7 at 1:45.
Hart got a 12-yard return by Leigh to the 24: run by Bright for -2, INTERCEPTION returned to the Hart 30.
MV: run by Moline for 6, run by Moline for 5, pass for 9, incomplete (spike), pass to Alvarez for 10 and the TD. 29-7
at :14 left in the half.
Hart had a run by Bright for -2 to end the half.
Offensively, Lyon was 2-8 for 2 yards (including the double pass) and an INT. Wolfe was 1 for 1, 59 yards and a TD. Bright
had 3 carries for a net two yards. Hart had the ball less than 3 minutes in the first half.
MV: Sanchez was 9 of 16 for 97 yards and a TD. Moline had 157 yards on 26 carries and 3 TDs. Gogerty had 6 yards on 2
carries and Sanchez had 54 yards on 5 carries.
Hart did very well for the first 18 minutes but then gave up 3 TDs in about 4 minutes right before halftime. It appeared
to me that the MV offensive line really controlled the game in that Hart never really came close to getting Sanchez and Moline
seemed guaranteed three yards every time he touched the ball (virtually everything was between the tackles) that is, he was
usually at least 3 yards beyond the line of scrimmage before he was touched. The Hart defensive front simply was worn down
after the first quarter.
Second half. Hart took the kickoff at the 15: run by Bright for -4, pass to Wolfe for 1, incomplete and punt.
MV at the 47: run by Moline for 6 and then an INT by Wolfe.
Hart at the 20: run by Wolfe on a direct snap for 0, pass to Wolfe for 36, run by Bright for 4, run by Bright by 8, incomplete
by Wolfe to Lyon; run by Lyon for 0, Lyon was sacked on the next play (the only sack of the night) but MV was called for a
late hit which was a net 4-yard gain for Hart making it fourth down and long: pass to Surratt for 11, run by Bright for 0,
run by Howell (the freshman) for -8 [MV rushed the front 7] and then an INT on a nice slant route but the pass was way behind
the receiver.
The interception was returned about 45 yards to the Hart 40: run by Moline for 3, run by Moline for 9, run by Moline for
3, run by Moline for 10, PENALTY (IP) -5, run by Moline for 5, run by Moline for 1 and then pass to Kelchner (?) for 14 and
the TD. MV 36-7 at :03 in the third.
On the return, Hart was assessed a PENALTY for a low block and started at the 10 [QUARTER]; Pass to Wolfe for 17, run
by Bright down the left and then through the middle for 73 yards and a TD. 36-13 at 11:19 (the first PAT attempt had a bad
snap, a penalty for a late hit and a penalty for offensive pass interference so the down was repeated and the kick missed).
Hart tried an on-sides kick and was unable to recover the loose ball before it went out of bounds (in essence, another
fumble that Hart wasn't quite quick enough to recover) so MV started at the 41: incomplete, run by Moline for about 49 yards
where he was snagged by the ankles from behind, his knees hit (isn't that the end of the play?) and he fumbled the ball forward
into the endzone where it was recovered by MV for a TD. MV 43-13 at 10:21.
Hart started at the 26: pass to Yudin for 8, run by Bright for 7, incomplete, pass to Yudin for 8 (the third straight
pass to Yudin after no passes where thrown his way in the first 3 quarters of the game), run by Bright for 2, run by Wolfe
on a double reverse for 8, pass to Wolfe for 10, pass to Wolfe for 10, run by Howell for 0 then an INT on a shovel pass. There
was a very long return but an illegal block negated all of it.
MV at the 20 with 5:20 left in the game and Sanchez still in: run by Gogerty for 5, run by Gogerty for 7, run by Sanchez
for 11 (flushed), pass for 15, run by Gogerty for 24, incomplete with a penalty for holding -14, run by Gogerty for 21, run
by Gogerty for 11 and the TD. MV 50-13 at 2:04.
Hart got a nice 40-yard return by Leigh to the 45: (at this point Hart put in all its senior receivers, pulling Yudin
and Leigh): run by Bright for 0, run by Bright for 15, PENALTY offsides, pass to Wolfe for 30 and pass to Wolfe for 5 and
the TD. 50-20 with :30 seconds to play.
MV took a knee and it was over.
Hart: Lyon was 10 of 15 for 136 yards, 1 TD and 2 INTs in the second half. Bright had 105 yards on 9 carries, Wolfe had
2 carries for 8 yards, Lyon 1 carry for 0, Howell 2 for -8 and Wolfe was 0-1 passing.
Moline had 86 yards on 8 carries. Sanchez was 2-4 and 29 yards, Gogerty had 68 yards on 5 carries and Sanchez had 1 carry
for 11 yards.
Clearly the MV lines dominated play. Offensively, they kept Hart away from Sanchez for the entire game. They opened holes
for Moline on the ground. The "grind it out" first quarter, though scoring no points, really took it out of the
Hart defense and MV got 3 relatively easy scores right before halftime. Defensively, the MV line got to Lyon only once but
they hit him on almost every play and made sure he got the ball off in an hurry all night.
Hart had some bright spots. Wolfe had 9 receptions for 113 yards and a TD. He also was 1 for 2 and 59 yards passing and
had 8 yards on 2 carries. He also had an INT. That is about as much as you can ask of any player. Ryan set a new single season
receiving record for Hart with 94 catches for the year breaking the oldest receiving record at Hart. But for his injury-shortened
junior year, he would probably have many of the Hart career records as well.
Najee was a Bright spot for Hart as well.
Lyon's first half was tough but he had a very decent second half.
Injuries, though not in this game, probably sealed Hart's fate some time ago: Zimmerman, Toledo and then Casselbury and
(throw in Bernardi's move to Flagstaff and four significant components in Hart's win last year were gone.
Next year's returners: Lyon at QB (I think another year of physical maturing will make a huge difference and he will be
pressed by the JV QB, Alex Pettee), Casselbury and Delano Howell at RB, Yudin and Leigh at receivers and I wouldn't be surprised
to see James Wheeler get some time at a receiver spot as well, Adam Best and Ricky Vittalo on the O-line. Defensively, Steve
Burton and J. T. Hartmire return on the D-line and Pat Sarkissian at linebacker. The DBs with significant playing time include
Casselberry, Wheeler and Leigh. And Weinstein the kicker also is back. A nice solid core for next year.
