Hart Dad
2004-Burroughs

Here's DRinSCV's write up as Hart Dad was in Argentina for a wedding.

The "Daily News" version:
(Short and to the point)

Tyler Lyon passed for 214 yards and 2 touchdowns to lead Hart (5-2, 2-0 in league) to a 41-7 win over Burroughs of Burbank (4-3, 0-2) October 22nd at College of the Canyons in a Foothill League game.

Lyon completed 15 of 25 passes and threw a pair of touchdown passes, both to Evan Surratt, as Hart won its third straight game and 65th straight Foothill League game in a streak that dates back to 1990. Robbie Casselberry rushed for 94 yards and 3 touchdowns, including a 45-yarder that opened the scoring for Hart. Najee Bright scored Hart's other touchdown on a 5-yard run in the second quarter.

Burroughs' only score came when Thomas Kyle returned a second-quarter kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown. But the Burroughs offense was held to no points and just 4 first downs on the night. The Hart defense generated 3 turnovers and registered 8 quarterback sacks.

Ryan Wolfe led all receivers with 6 catches (for 93 yards), pushing his season total to 57, which leads all receivers in the Daily News region.

Next week, Hart will host Valencia (6-1) in the most-anticipated game in Santa Clarita this season. Last year, Hart barely held off the Vikings after overcoming a 21-point first-half deficit. The game is next Friday at 7:30 at College of the Canyons.

The "Hart Dad" version (as compiled by DRinSCV):

Hart took the opening kickoff and began from their own 20 after a touchback. A screen pass from Lyon gained just 1 yard on the first play, but Casselberry gained 5 yards on the next play before Lyon connected with Troy Yudin for 15 yards and a first down to the 41. Lyon went back to pass, was forced to scramble and was sacked for a 1-yard loss by Francisco Chaidez on the next play, but then Casselberry gained 16 yards on a draw play to get another first down at the Burroughs 44. However, the drive ended abruptly when Lyon, looking for Evan Surratt on a long pass down the middle of the field, was intercepted by Burroughs' Thomas Kyle at the 9-yard line.

Burroughs' possession lasted just 4 plays: a pair of runs by Kyle for 6 yards followed by a sack of Burroughs QB Nick Payne for a 5-yard loss. Eric Herskovitz and J.T. Hartmire combined for the tackle, which forced a punt. Chaidez came on to kick, and his punt rolled dead at the Burroughs 45. On the very next play, Casselberry took a handoff, went through the middle of the line, then cut to the right sideline and into the end zone for a 45-yard TD run. Paul Weinstein's extra point made it 7-0 just 5:14 into the game.

Kyle took the ensuing kickoff for Burroughs at his own 7 and was tackled at his 20, giving Burroughs first and 10. Christian Martinez was stopped for no gain on first down, and Payne was forced to scramble but was tackled by Wolfe for a 2-yard loss. Then came an incomplete pass, forcing another 4th down. But this time Chaidez' kick went off the side of his foot, bouncing just once before reaching the visitors' grandstand. The net was just 6 yards, giving Hart the ball at the 24. A 10-yard pass from Lyon to Wolfe got the ball to the 14, and a 9-yard run by Najee Bright moved it to the 5. Bright finished the drive on the next play, scoring through the middle to make it 14-0 with 4 minutes left in the first quarter.

On the ensuing kickoff, Kyle took the ball from his own goal line but was tackled at his own 13. But on the next play, Martinez broke through the right side for a 42-yard run, easily Burroughs' longest play from scrimmage of the night. However, the drive then stalled; Martinez gained 5 on the next run, but Herskovitz sacked Payne for a 1-yard loss on the next play. A 5-yard delay of game penalty moved Burroughs back to the 46 for a 3rd and 11, and Payne's next pass fell incomplete. On came Eric Passi to punt. His kick rolled dead at the Hart 8, but the Burroughs offense came away without any points.

And Hart quickly drove the 92 yards for their third touchdown, covering the distance in just 6 plays. Lyon gained 11 yards on a keeper, then threw for 17 to Yudin to get the ball to the 37. Then came a pair of 11-yard passes to Surratt to move into Burroughs territory. A 14-yard run by Bright got the ball to the 28, and Lyon finished the drive on the first play of the second quarter when he found Surratt alone in the left corner of the end zone for a 28-yard TD pass to make it 21-7.

Burroughs got their only score of the night on the next kickoff. The kick bounced several times before Kyle picked up the ball at his own 6 just a few yards from the left sideline. Following his blockers for a few yards, he burst through the pack around the 20 and broke a couple of would-be tackles before heading up the sideline and just kept going. In all, the return covered 94 yards and brought Burroughs to within 14 at 21-7.

But Hart soon answered back, extending their lead to 28-7 on the next drive. Terry Leigh had a nice return shortened by a block-in-the-back penalty, giving Hart first down at their own 14. Quick passes of 6 and 7 yards to Wolfe helped get things started, though the next 2 plays gained just 2 yards on a short run by Bright and an incomplete pass. On third down, Lyon found Wolfe for a short pass that soon became a big play as Wolfe burst down the left sideline. By the time he was caught, he'd reached the Burroughs 17 for a 54-yard gain. An incomplete pass and a holding penalty, which wiped out a completion to Leigh, moved Hart back to the 27 for 2nd and 20, but Casselberry gained 13 yards on a draw to get the ball back to the 14. Lyon then kept the ball on a quarterback draw and was stopped just short of the end zone for another 13-yard gain. Casselberry took it the final yard, making it 28-7 with 7:59 left in the second quarter.

Burroughs got the ball back at the 20 after a touchback, but quickly gained a first down (their second of the night) on a 12-yard run by Kyle. A 2-yard gain by Martinez got the ball to the 34, but an illegal shift penalty on Burroughs moved it back to the 29 for 2nd and 13. And it got worse for Burroughs when Martinez was stuffed by Herskovitz for a 4-yard loss, setting up 3rd and 17. Payne then went back to pass, but was flushed from the pocket by the rush and was chased towards the right sideline by Pat Sarkissian. Just before stepping over the sideline, Payne threw the ball into the crowd of Burroughs players on the bench and was called for intentional grounding, forcing another Burroughs punt.

Passi's kick traveled 42 yards, but Hart's Wolfe fielded the ball and returned it 9 yards to the Burroughs 42. Hart ended up going 3-and-out on a pair of incomplete passes and an 8-yard sack by Francisco Coronado. Dillon Christensen came on to punt, and his kick rolled dead at the Burroughs 14. But Burroughs also was unable to move the ball, gaining 4 yards on two runs but losing 5 yards when Wolfe stopped Kyle on a screen pass for a 5-yard loss on third down. Passi's punt went 37 yards, but Wolfe caught it on the run and returned it to the Burroughs 21 for a 29-yard return. After a 6-yard gain on a run by Bright, Hart scored its fifth touchdown of the game when Lyon found Surratt in the middle of the end zone from 15 yards out. Weinstein's kick sailed wide right, so the score stayed 34-7. 1:54 remained in the half. Kyle took the ensuing kickoff near the goal line (he appeared to fall into the end zone in making the catch) and returned it to the 11. Burroughs ended up running 4 plays, the most important of which was a 12-yard run by Martinez to get a first down and avoiding having to punt once again. The half ran out with the score 34-7 Hart.

The second-half kickoff went out of bounds, giving Burroughs the ball at the 35. But Burroughs gave the ball right back when Martinez fumbled on the very next play. Christenson recovered at the 44 for Hart. Then Lyon tried a pass that not only missed connections with Wolfe but was ruled a lateral. Bobby Kokrak nearly recovered for Burroughs, only to have Wolfe snatch the ball away from him at the last second. Lyon then passed to Christensen for 12 yards and Wolfe for 4 more, giving Hart a first down. However, on the next play, John Trujillo sacked Lyon for a 12-yard loss. An 11-yard pass from Lyon to Yudin got most of that back, but Lyon's third-down pass fell incomplete. On fourth down, Lyon lofted a pass over any possible Hart receiver, but Burroughs' Ignacio Alatorre caught the ball for an interception at the Burroughs 2. (He'd have been better-advised to just drop the ball since the line of scrimmage was the 34 and it was fourth down).

On Burroughs' next series, Kyle lost a yard (back to the 1) on first down and barely got out of the end zone for no gain on second down. Payne tossed a short pass to Josh Balderes for an 8-yard gain on third down, a play that not only got Burroughs out of the shadow of its goalposts but also allowed Payne to finish with positive net yards passing on the night. Passi then came on to punt, and though his kick went 33 yards, Wolfe again had a nice return, gaining 11 of those yards back, giving Hart the ball at the 31. A Lyon pass fell incomplete on first down, but Casselberry gained 9 yards on second down and 2 more on third down to give Hart first and 10 at the 20. Then came a 5-yard run on a lateral to Wolfe. Another pass fell incomplete, but the Lyon completed a 12-yard pass to Wolfe to get the ball to the 3. Casselberry took it the final 3 yards to make it 34-7 with 1:54 left in the third.

After that, things got a bit sloppy as both teams substituted freely. Burroughs' next drive ended when a Payne pass was nearly intercepted by Pat Sarkissian, but the ball then deflected to James Wheeler, who made a nice diving catch. Hart's ensuing drive was stopped largely because of a 17-yard holding penalty, and they punted the ball away. But Burroughs held the ball for just 11 seconds when Payne fumbled and Brock Arndt recovered at the Burroughs 6. But Hart was unable to take advantage of that opportunity and ended up coming away empty. A 2-yard run by Moore got the ball to the 4, but Martinez sacked Moore for a 6-yard loss on the next play and Kokrak sacked him for an 8-yard loss on the play after that. Moore's pass on 4th and goal from the 18 fell incomplete. 10:05 remained in the game.

Burroughs failed to gain a first down and punted, but Hart turned it right back over when Moore fumbled a snap and Alberto Lucero recovered for Burroughs at the 47. Backup QB Tony Banuelos scrambled for 13 yards to pick up a first down, but the drive ended at the Hart 43 when Burroughs turned the ball over on downs.

On came Hart's third-team on offense, consisting of Tyler Wilson at QB and Bryan Toledo at RB! He'd missed the last few games with injury and illness, but on he came for some playing time. On the first play, Wilson turned to hand off the ball to Toledo, but he was too far away! So Wilson kept the ball and started running, and he ended up gaining 24 yards. On the next play, Wilson got the ball to Toledo, who rambled for 21 yards to the Burroughs 12. The drive bogged down at that point, and when Toledo was stopped for a 3-yard gain on 4th and 6 with 5 seconds left, the official just let the clock run out.

The numbers: Lyon was 15 of 25 for 214 yards and 2 TDs and 2 ints. Wolfe had 6 catches for 93 yards, while Surratt had 4 for 65 and 2 TDs. Casselberry had 94 yards on just 8 carries and scored 3 TDs. Bright had 6 carries for 33 yards and a TD. Herskovitz had 2.5 sacks while Sarkissian had 1.5 to lead the Hart defense to an amazing 8 sacks.

OK -- there are the details. Draw your own conclusions. And get there early for the SCV Game of the Year: Hart vs. Valencia, Friday at 7:30 at College of the Canyons.
