Hart Dad
2004-Moorpark
Home

Here's the summary. Moorpark took the opening kick and started at the 20 after a 15-yard return. The running back had a terrific night and his first carry was consistent with that: 11-yard run; 0-yard run; 16-yard pass; 15-yard run; -2-yard run; 9-yard pass; an all out blitz and a sack for -6 and a punt (very short). This initial series must have set off a few alarm bells in the Hart camp because almost all the running yards were up the middle.

Hart took over at the 26: Pass to Wolfe for 11, run by Casselbury (hereafter RC -- I can't write it every time) for 2, pass to Wolfe for 13 with a terrific block by Surratt, run by RC for 4, 2 incompletes and a punt.

Moorpark took the ball at the 20: Inc, run for 12, run for 0, pass for 4, Inc and punt (great bounce).

Hart took over at the 34 and went three and out are three incompletes -- all overshooting the intended receiver.

Hart's first break came when the returner fumbled on the return. Hart got the ball back at the Moorpark 42: pass to Wolfe for 14, pass to Surratt for 10, and then an 18-yard run by RC for the TD and Hart lead at 2:34 in the first quarter.

MP got a very nice 24-yard return out to the 26 and went -1-yard on a run, 25-yard pass, 8-yd run, 5-yd pass, 11-yd run, 6-yd run, 5-yd pass and then a nice 15-yard run for the TD. It was 7-7 at the 11:03 in the second.

Hart came right back with an 18-yard return by James Wheeler. Pass to Wheeler for 5, run by Lyon for 15 (intentional), 24-yd draw to RC, inc., then probably the worst play for Hart -- the center snapped it way over Lyon&'s head (and he's 6'5") and it was a race to see who would get to it first. Lyon got it but it was a 28-yard loss. No problem. The next play, 3rd down, was a 36-yard pass to Wolfe. Dillon Christensen scored on a 20-yd pass on the next play. He then missed the PAT so it was Hart 13-7 at 8:08.

MP: 18 run, 8 run, Inc, 2 run, 2 run, 44 yard run down to the Hart 4. Then a great stand by Hart on defense with a very lucky break. First play was -1 run, then a +2, then the third play the QB went to pass and got hammered. It looked to me like an Inc but the ref called it a fumble. MP got it but with a 9-yard loss out to the 12. MP missed the FG from there.

Hart started at the 20 again: QB run for 1 (flushed out), pass to Troy Yudin (watch for this name!) for 10, pass to RC for 12, pass to Surratt for 29, run by RC for 1, pass to Yuden for 17, pass to Wolfe for 6, run by Lyon for 6 and a TD. Lyon came off that run fired up and it clearly had an impact on his teammates who seemed to be somewhat laggarly in their play at times. Leigh caught a pass for the 2-point conversion and it was 21-7 at 1:10.

MP ran out the clock on two more downs.

Lyon was 12-19 and over 200 yards in the first half plus a TD. Hart had about 50 net yards on the ground. MP was 6 for 9 for 60 yards passing and had 149 yards rushing on 20 carries. The statistics reflect that it was pretty balanced up to that point with the fumbled punt giving Hart the edge.

The second half did not start well. Wheeler once again had a nice 28-yd return out to the 32. Lyon's first pass was a 25-yarder to Leigh. The next pass was underthrown and intercepted and returned to the MP 36. Handoff to the RB, he heads around the rightside and goes 64 yards for the TD.

Back at the line of scrimmage Surratt was on all fours (he was I think playing left OLB on the play) tried to stand and then collapsed, laying on his side. The medical folks and trainers got right out there. He didn't move for 30 minutes. The paramedics and ambulance finally arrived and got took him away. I don't know what happened. It was reported that he was hit in the back and the Hart coaches seemed a little steamed. All that matters is that nothing is seriously wrong!

After the big delay, MP kicked the PAT and it was 21-14 at 11:00 in the third.

Hart started at the 25 (Wheeler had another nice return; he's gonna break one of these!), inc, 1-yd run by Lyon, pass to Wolfe for 16, RC run for 10, pass to Leigh for 0, inc (dropped by a wide open receiver in the endzone), pass to Wolfe for 15, run by RC for 2, inc, , inc, pass to Yudin for 9, run by RC for 6 (LT Zimmerman went out on this play with an injured knee which also stopped play for several minutes) and then a 15-yd run by RC on a pitch play for the TD. Hart 28-14 at 6:42 in the third.

At this point the defense really sharpened up. MP pass for 10, run for -4, inc, SACK for -8 and punt.

Hart: inc, QB run for 0 and INT.

MP: run for 1, run for 6 (QB flushed), run for 2 and punt.

Hart: run by RB for -2, SACK for -9 and then an 85 yard TD on a pass to Yudin on the first play of the fourth quarter. Hart 35-14 at 11:51 in the fourth.

MP: pass for 5, PENALTY OFFSIDES ON HART -- the first penalty on either team (actually there was a penalty on the first Hart TD for holding but, obviously, it was declined), run for 8, run for 2, inc (almost intercepted) then a sack/fumble recovered by Hart at the 28.

Hart: run by Bright for 21, run by Bright for 1, run by Lyon for 3 and then a 3-yd TD pass to Wolfe. Hart once again missed the PAT and it was 41-14 at 7:32.

Its all wrapped up, right? Hardly: 84-yard kickoff return by MP for a TD. The PAT missed so it was 41-20 at 7:13.

Hart started at the 25: run by RC for 6, pass to Yudin for 20, run by RC for 38, run by Bright for 11 and a TD (this may be an error on my part -- it may have been Wheeler). Hart 48-20 at 5:38.

MP: run for 1 and then an INT by Robby Moore which he returned to the MP 40.

The subs came in: run by Moore for 10, run by Wheeler (Bright?) for 22, run by Moore for 8 and the TD (right up the middle). Hart 55-20 with 3:10.

MP: run for 8 and then fumble.

Hart: run by Bright for 13, run by Bright for 4 and then knee by Wilson who played QB on this series.

The final numbers for Hart: Lyon was 20 of 33 for 356 yards, 3 TDs and 2 INTs. He also scored one TD rushing. He was sacked once and also had a big loss tracking down the snap over his head. Rushing total for Lyon was -11.

Casselbury had 122 yards on 12 carries and 2 TDs. Bright had 50 yards on 5 carries and a TD (I think that's right. I may have Bright's and Wheeler's totals mixed up) and Wheeler was 1 for 22. Robbie Moore had 2 rushes for 18 yards and a TD. He also had an INT.

Commentary: Lyon looked a little shaky in the first quarter and threw a few off his back foot and sort of side arm. He really started getting into it in the second quarter, stepping into his throws and really hanging in there in the pocket (he really got clobbered a few times).

The receiving corps looked good to great to spectacular. Only two outright drops and tons of yards after the catch. Wolfe had 8 catches for 114 yards; Surratt 2 for 39 (but missed all but 2 plays in the second half); Wheeler 1 for 5; Christensen 1 for 20, Yudin 5 for 141, Casselbury 1 for 12 and Leigh 2 for 25.

Defensively, Hart had two big breakdowns: the long run from scrimmage right after halftime and the long kick return. The long run may well have been tied into whatever happened to Surratt. The kick return was in part the kicker's problem. He kicked the ball moderately high and short so all his teammates where well down the field when the returner caught it. A couple of steps and he was past the entire defense and off to the races.

Hart made a number of changes to the defense during the game. Hartmire did not start but came in the second series. Ochuwandi (sorry about the spelling) spent a lot of time at DT too. Arndt, like last season, started at OLB but in fairly short order was back at DE. Surratt and Wolfe were at OLBs at various times and Wheeler was at one corner most of the night. Patrick Meza and Sarkissian also were in there. I wouldn't be surprised if the Arndt move isn't permanent.

Not a flawless game by any means but Hart clearly was the controlling force after about the first third of the game. Next week: St. B. at COC.
