Speed kills. Squandered Opportunities. Season over.
Neither team was too impressive in the first half on offense with Hueneme leading 9-7 at half (including a field goal that
Hart fans are still wondering about). Hueneme took control in the third quarter going up 23-7. Hart scored late
in the fourth to make it 23-15 then got the ball back with 1:41 on a fumble but just could not hit the receivers at
the end.
Now for some details.
Hart took the opening kickoff and after a bauble, got a short return out to the 11. Hart moved the ball steadily
-- if slowly down -- down the field, largely are a nice passing game and relatively ineffective running. The Indians
got to Hueneme 23 but then turned over the ball on four straight incompletions which sort of capsulized the Hart season: incomplete
on a high pass, incomplete when the receiver turned a little late and didn't see the ball coming, incomplete on a ball thrown
a little high and then incomplete on a drop.
Hueneme moved from the 23 out to the Hart 46 before punting. Hart then went three and out. Hueneme started
at the Hart 48, stalled out the Hart 19. They tried a field goal which appeared from the stands to hit the cross bar
and go underneath it. One ref signaled no good. The other signaled FG. Hueneme 3-0 at 2:03 in the first
quarter.
Hart then went three and out getting a very nice punt down to the 1 yard line. Hueneme moved to out to the 33 and
then back to the 15 on a holding penalty. MacArthur intercepted on the next play and returned it to the 25. Hart
scored 5 plays later on a 10-yard pass to Borland. Hart 7-3 on 6:38 in the second quarter.
Hueneme went three and out. Hart started at the Indian36 and moved to the Hueneme 41 when Hueneme intercepted it's
first pass of the evening. They then moved the ball 67 yards on 6 plays, scoring on a 25-yard pass play to Moeslein
with :27 left in the half to make it 9-7 at half. MacArthur ahd a 29-yard return on the ensuing kickoff but Hart didn't
do anything with it.
Hueneme got a 27-yard return to start the second half out to the 28 and scored two plays later on a 65 yard run by Nixon
who took a direct snap. 16-7 at 10:56 in the third.
Hart once again moved into Hueneme territory but stalled at the 46 and punted down to the 6. Nixon had 1 45-yard
run to the Hart 40 on another direct snap and then a 32-yard run for a TD to make it 23-7 in the at 5:56 in the third.
Hart once again got into Hueneme territory but a long, underthrown pass was intercepted at the Hart 17. Hart got
the ball back a few plays later when Justyn Eddins stripped the ball and recovered a fumble at the Hart 44. Hart moved
downto the 21 but then a fourth down pass was batted into the air and caught by a Hart receiver -- for a 17-yard loss on fourth
down. Hueneme went three and out. Hart started at the 37 and another interception, the third of the night, stopped
the drive on the first play. Hueneme then went three and out.
Hart started at the 33 and scored 8 plays later on a 27-yard TD pass to Borland. Kevin King made a nice snag at the
back of the endzone on the two-point conversion to make it 23-15 with 4:45 left in the game.
Hart kicked deep and Hueneme moved the ball effectively, forcing Hart to use all it's timeouts. Then, stunningly,
Hayden Scott stripped the ball from a receiver on a short pass and somehow Hart came up with the ball with 1:41 left and no
timeouts! Unfortunately the drive ended after a short completion, an incomplete, a sack and one final incompletion.
Stats for Hart:
Passing: Reyes was 19 of 38 for 206 yards, 2 TDs and 3 INTs.
Rushing: Reyes had 11 carries for 37 yards; Stephens had 13 carries for 9 yards.
Receiving: Stephens had 2 catches for 11 yards; Hairston 4 catches for 36 yards: Borland 5 catches for 81
yards and 2 TDs; MacArthur 5 catches for 81 yards; King 2 catches for 14 yards and Cornelius 1 catch for -17.
Stats for Hueneme:
Passing: Barnfather was 21 of 38 for 182 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT. Nixon had 1 pass for 10 yards to Barnfather.
Rushing: I have to divide this by halves so one can see what the difference was. In the first half Nixon had
18 yards on 8 carries and Barnfather had 8 on 3 carries.
In the second half, Nixon had 178 yards on 9 carries and 2 TDs (I may have attributed one or more runs to the wrong guy).
The other runners of which there were six had 6 yards on 8 carries.
Receiving: Fabian had 3 catches for 44 yards, Barker had 9 catches for 68 yards, Barnfather had 1 for 10, Nixon
had 5 for 25, Moeslien had 1 for 25 and a TD, Bradley had 1 for 6, Ewald had 1 for 14. There was one catch (and a fumble)
at the end of the game that I missed and weird problem where Barker caught a pass and pitched to Nixon so that Barker gets
a catch and the QB gets the total yards.
