I was unable to attend this game but caught portions of it over the internet
while in a remote area far, far away. Then, of course, my good friend provided me with a copy of the game DVD so I now have
the whole story.
Hart opened the game with an unsuccessful onside kick so Canyon started
at the Hart 49. The Cowboys scored 8 plays later on a 1-yard Camp run. The PAT was good and it was 7-0
Canyon at 8:50.
Following an offsides penalty on the kickoff, Hart fair caught the kick
and then went three and out including two drops by receivers.
Canyon fumbled the ensuing punt giving Hart it’s first break of the
night. Starting at the Canyon 31, Hart scored in a 3-play drive culminating with a 16-yard pass to Glasnow. 7-7
at 7:06 in the first.
Canyon 3 and out.
Hart 3 and out (including an offsides penalty against Canyon and a drive-killing
holding penalty on Hart).
Starting at the 25, Canyon scored on a 8-play drive on a 1-yard run by
Cusamano. Hart was tagged with two pass interference penalties on the drive. Canyon got hit with an illegal block penalty
as well. MacArthur blocked the PAT and it was 13-7 Canyon at 11:56 in the second.
Hart got a nice 29-yard return by Cox and eventually got to the Canyon
(with 1 illegal procedure penalty mixed in) but a 12-yard loss on a sack killed the drive and Hart punted.
Canyon got out the 47 when the quarterback threw an interception to Hart
linebacker Aguilar. Five plays later, Diamond took it in from the 9. The PAT missed and it was 13-13 at
3:55 left in the half.
Canyon went on another fairly long drive that stalled around the 23 and
the field goal attempt missed. Hart and Canyon went nowhere on ensuing drives before halftime.
Hart took the second half pooch kick and marched 63-yards for a TD on 6
plays. The TD was on a 18-yard pass to Glasnow (only 1 illegal procedure penalty on the series). The PAT
missed and it was 19-13 at 9:09 in the third quarter.
Canyon drove down to the Hart 13 (helped by a 15-yard late-hit penalty)
but stalled and the field goal attempt was blocked by MacArthur. On the ensuing series, Hart ultimately moved backward with
a sack and a delay penalty and punted from the 13. Rivas returned the it 17 yards to the Hart 45. Canyon scored 4 plays later
on a 29-yard run by Rivas. The PAT was good. 20-19 Canyon at 3:33 in the third.
Hart went on a 9-play drive that was hindered mightily by two holding penalties. Hart kicked a 33-yard field goal to make it 22-20 at 11:56 in the fourth.
On the next series, Canyon started at the 20 and got the 29 (an illegal
procedure penalty and a sack didn’t help) and then, inexplicably, went for it on fourth down and Camp got stuffed, turning
the ball over to Hart at the Canyon 29. After a holding penalty moved the ball back 11 yards, Hart scored on a 7-play drive
which finished with a 1-yard run by Souza for the TD. Hart 29-20 at 6:55.
Canyon got a huge 75-yard return from Rivas and started at the Hart 18,
scoring two plays later on a 14-yard pass to Voogt to make it 29-27 with 6:07 left in the game.
Hart went three and out but Canyon got no return on the punt and started
at the Canyon 41. Then what a final series: run by Camp for 0; on the next play, a Hart interception was nullified by a defensive
holding call which was apparently assessed from the spot, in any event the ball was moved 25 yards to the Hart 34: pass to
Camp for 5, sack for -8, then a pass and fumble which was recovered by Hart a the 18 with 1:55 left. Following a run with
a holding penalty call and then another run for a first down, Hart ran out the clock.
Stats: Souza was 12 of 21 for 205 yards and 2 TDs (and no INTS!).
He ran 18 times for 42 yards and a TD. Stephens had 89 yards on 18 carries and Diamond had 17 yards on 4 carries and a TD.
Diamond had 4 catches for 71 yards, Borland 3 for 52, Glasnow 2 for 34 and 2 TDs, Allmond 2 for 26 and Stephens 1 for 22.
Adamczyk was 17 of 28 for 210 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT. He had 2 carries
for -10 (both sacks), Geffen Camp had 111 yards on 21 carries and a TD, Cusumano had 24 yards on 7 carries and a TD, Rivas
has 1 carry for 29 yards and a TD, Habberstad had 1 carry for 10 yards and Hopper had 1 carry for 4 yards. Voogt had 9 receptions
for 117 yards and a TD, Rivas had 6 for 75 yards, Habberstad had 1 for 13 and Camp had 1 for 5.
A big win for Hart in which the team showed heart throughout the game.
