My first comment on this game is game "rough" as in "rough around the edges." While there was some excellent play by both teams there also were a lot of penalties and a lot of "imprecision."

Hart went up 6-0 14 seconds into the game on an 88-yard kickoff return by Delano Howell. Much of the rest of the first quarter was very unimpressive offensively though the defense, particularly Hart's defense against the run, was very effective. Hart punted twice and Moorpark three times in the first quarter alone. The third Moorpark punt was the charm for Moorpark when the Hart returner bobbled it and Moorpark recovered.

On that drive, Moorpark started at the Musketeer 48 and drove down to the Hart 10 where they got stuffed. They tried a field goal which Hart blocked. Jacob Stevens picked it up and returned it 90+ yards for a touchdown. BUT - oh oh -- there was a hold at about the 50, well behind the play, so Hart started at the Hart 39 and as the result of some penalties ended up back at the 13 and was forced to punt. Moorpark, after another "going nowhere" drive, punted. Hart then went on an 85-yard drive which ended with a 3-yard TD run by Howell. The big play was a 35-yard pass to sophomore slot Blake Borland. With the 2-point conversion, another pass to Borland, it was 14-0.

Following another exchange of punts, it was half time. The leading rushing, by far, was BR Holbrook, the Hart QB.

The third quarter did not start out much better for Moorpark: an INT on the first possession. Hart was unable to move and botched a field goal attempt. Moorpark went nowhere and punted. On the next series, Holbrook threw a 25-yard TD pass to Felt for 21-0 lead.

Moorpark managed somewhat of a drive but the ball eventually went to Hart on downs at the Hart 29. Hart had another nice drive culminating with a 65-yard pass to Diamond for 28-0 lead early in the fourth.

MP scored on a 75-yard drive at 7:39. Hart punted and MP scored again at 3:18 and then recovered the ball on an on-side kick. Hart got the ball back on downs and it was over.

The Hart defense looked terrific until the last 11 minutes; then it was a little hairy in the pass defense department. The Hart passing game sharpened up a lot as the game progressed. The Moorpark QB was not much through the first three quarters and stellar in the 10 minutes.

Here's the play-by-play detail:

Delano Howell took the opening kickoff at about the 12 and returned it the distance for a TD. What a great way to start a season! Hart missed the extra point. Hart 6-0 at 11:44.

Moorpark got a 12-yard return and started at the 20: run for -1, incomplete, SACK for -1 and punt.

There was no return on the punt and Hart started at the 33: run by Holbrook for 11, PENALTY, illegal procedure for -5, PENALTY offsides for +5, SACK for -4, incomplete, incomplete and punt.

Moorpark got a 5-yard return on the punt (a kamikaze punter returner!) and started at the 30: run for -1, pass for 12, SACK for -6, incomplete, pass for 5 and punt.

Hart got no return and started at the 18: Howell run for 0, run by Howell for 27 on a very wide, pass-like pitch (great blocking by the receivers downfield!), pass to Diamond for 2, run by Howell for 4, run by Howell for -6 and punt.

Fair catch by Moorpark at the 15: incomplete, incomplete, run by QB for 5 (flush) and punt.

The Hart returner muffed the catch and Moorpark recovered at the 48: incomplete, run for 0, PENALTY for facemask +15, incomplete [QUARTER], pass for 14, incomplete, PENALTY pass interference +12, run for 2, incomplete, incomplete. The attempted field goal was blocked and Hart defensive back picked the ball up around the 8 and returned it the length of the field for an apparent touchdown. But NOOOOOO. There was a holding call at about mid-field that had to have occurred at least 10 to 15 yards behind the runner (bet that will be discussed in films tomorrow!).

With the penalty, Hart started at the Hart 39: run by Diamond on a slot counter for -8, then the most confusing play of the game. Holbrook dropped back on what was an obvious screen play. It did not materialize and as he was being sacked, he threw the ball. It clearly went forward but the Moorpark kids treated it as if was a fumble, picked up the ball and ended for the endzone. A very late flag came out from the referee (the white hat) signaling PENALTY for intentional grounding. Meanwhile, a dispute broke out along the sidelines and two more flags went up. The referee announced these two dead ball unsportsmanlike penalties were offsetting. However, the grounding was marked off from the spot of the foul – plus a loss of down. After this was all sorted out, Hart ended up at it's own 13 and 3rd down. Following an incomplete, Hart punted.

Moorpark got another 1-yard kamikaze return to the 50: incomplete, pass for 11, run for -1, run by QB for 8, PENALTY for holding -19, PENALTY for illegal procedure -5, incomplete and punt.

Hart let the punt roll to the endzone and started on the 20: PENALTY delay of game -5, run by Howell 3, run by Howell for 6, run by Holbrook for 14, run by Holbrook for 11, run by Holbrook for 9, pass to Borland for 35, run by Howell for 3 and the TD. Pass to Borland for 2-point conversion. Hart 14-0 at 4:30.

Moorpark got a 10-yard return to the 31: incomplete, incomplete, pass for -2 and punt.

Hart got no return (Hart made no attempt whatsoever to field a punt after the fumble in the first quarter): run by Holbrook for 9, run by Holbrook for 3, run by Holbrook for 4, run by Howell for 3, run by Howell for 5, incomplete, pass to Borland for 5, incomplete and punt.

The punt went out of bounds and Moorpark started at the 33: incomplete, run for 4 and halftime.

First half stats: Holbrook was 3 of 8 for 42 yards [the intentional grounding play is scored as an incomplete pass]. Holbrook ran for 57 yards on 8 carries. Howell had 45 yards on 9 carries including a TD. He also had 88 return yards and a TD. Diamond had one carry for -8 and a reception for 2. Borland had 2 catches for 40 yards plus a catch for 2-point conversion.

The second half:

Moorpark got a 16-yard return and started at the 25: incomplete, run for -2, INTERCEPTION by Wachtner.

Hart started at the Moorpark 20: run by Howell for 6, run by Howell for -2, incomplete (holding PENALTY declined). The snap on the field goal attempt was bobbled and the holder was tackled at the 26.

Moorpark at the 26: SACK for -1, incomplete, incomplete and punt.

Hart (no return) at the 34: pass to Felt for 16, run by Howell for -1, incomplete, PENALTY pass interference +15, PENALTY offsides +5, run by Holbrook for 1, run by Howell for 0, run by Holbrook for 6, pass to Felt for 24 and the touchdown. Hart 21-0 at 5:21 in the third.

Moorpark got a 25-yard return to the 33: pass for 20, incomplete, pass for 10, run by the QB for 2, incomplete, pass for 9, run by the QB for 1, run for 1, SACK for -10, run by the QB for 5 and on fourth down, incomplete.

Hart (no return): incomplete, run by Holbrook (flushed) for 9, run by Holbrook for 2 [QUARTER], PENALTY illegal procedure -5, pass to Diamond for 65 yards and the touchdown. Hart 28-0 at 11:47 in the fourth.

Until this point in the game, Moorpark had a net 84 yard through three quarters. Things changed.

Moorpark got a 19-yard return to the 25: pass for 14, run for -2, incomplete, pass for 35, SACK for -2, pass for 12, pass for 7, incomplete, pass for 5, incomplete, pass for 6 and the touchdown. 28-7 at 7:39 in the fourth.

Hart got a 26-yard return by Howell to the 31: run by Howell for 14, run by Howell for 8, run by Howell for 3, run Holbrook for -5 and punt.

Moorpark got 15 yards on the return because of a PENALTY on the Hart punting team hitting the returner as he caught the ball and started at the 47: pass for 33, pass for 5, incomplete, pass for 6, pass for 9 and the touchdown. Hart 28-14 at 3:18.

The Hart "handss" team failed to cover the onsides kick so Moorpark started at the 42: run by QB (flushed) for 5, pass for 11, incomplete, PENALTY offsides for +5, incomplete, run by QB for 1 (flushed) and on fourth down, incomplete.

Hart at the 36: run by Howell for 4, run by Howell for -2 and run by Holbrook for 9 and the end of the game:
