Hart Dad
1996-Loyola
Home

In the fifth game of the season, Hart traveled to Glendale High to play Loyola. Loyola was ranked second in Division I and number three in the state.

Hart kicked off but got the ball back a few plays later. The Indians scored on a pass over the middle which Cody Joyce ran down the field for about 30 yards. Ultimately Hart ran its lead up to 24-3 before Loyola scored a touchdown in the waning minutes. Hart won 24-10 in a huge upset and morale booster.

Statistically, Hart was outplayed in most categories but took advantage of several turnovers and Loyola was without its starting quarterback (not as big a deal as it might seem because their forte is running and defense). Hart did a good job of jamming things up in the middle. Todd Hourigan had 20 tackles.

Travis Carroll was 11 of 16 for 171 yards and 2 touchdowns. Cody Joyce had 7 receptions for 137 yards including a 40-yard quarter touchdown. Running back Chris Wright, who had only about 150 yards rushing in the first four games, had 69 yards on nine carries.

In an aside, polls are both fickle and foolish. In the Division II poll last week, Valencia High (4-0) was ranked third right behind Dominquez and ahead of Antelope Valley. On paper that 4-0 record looks good but two of the games were against Division X schools and the other two were against Division XI schools which is one step above 8-man teams (Division XII). In their first game against a Division II school on Friday, Valencia lost by two to Littlerock, historically the doormat of the Golden League. We'll find out what their really made of soon -- league starts Friday.

All in all the "standings" are kinda goofy. Valencia is "first" at 4-1, followed by Burroughs at 4-1 (they have a quarterback that everybody wants). Hart and Saugus are both 3-2 and Canyon and Burbank are both 2-3 (I think Burbank won its first game in two years a couple of weeks ago).

Strength of schedule is interesting. I've already told you about Valencia's. Burroughs isn't much better. Hart's opponents to date have a collective record of 21-5-1 -- and three of those losses were to Hart! Talk about a tough schedule!
