Rob Westervelt started at quarterback as a junior. As a sophomore on the JV team, he threw for 2804 yards and 39 touchdowns
in only 9 games, staggering numbers for a JV quarterback. His selection as the varsity quarterback was controversial. He
was named the starter only a couple of days before the first game over Chad Fotheringham, also a junior who had served as
the backup on the varsity the previous season. Fotheringham eventually left the team late in the season to concentrate on
basketball. Interestingly, he came back the next year and was all-league at tight end and went on to start at QB at Snow
Junior College in Utah and University of the Pacific in Stockton, despite having never started a game as a varsity quarterback
in high school.
Westervelt had two games that really stand out: against Alhambra when he was 16 of 19 for 210 yards and 5 touchdowns with
1 interception. His debut was pretty impressive too: 18 of 26 for 245 yards and 4 TDs with no interceptions. At one point
in that game, he completed 12 consecutive passes.
