1948 (0-8)
The First Season

Hart's Varsity Football history starts in 1948. The students moved onto the current campus that Fall. The facility was incomplete but the District went forward with the outdoor dedication ceremony anyway -- it was 106 that day. [The school opened in 1946. 1947 was a JV schedule.]

The high school had 339 students that year with about 50-60 seniors. The new campus was evidence of a lot of foresight by the school district given that the campus was built for about 1400 students, a number it did not reach for almost two decades.

The Indians played in the Ventura League the first few seasons. To suggest that the first season did not go well would be an understatement; Hart was 0-8 and scored 24 points in 8 games. Worse, Hart was shutout five times including the first three games.

*The Black-Foxe Military Academy, located in the Hancock Park area, was the private school of choice for many of the Hollywood elite during the 1920-50s. It lost its cache in the Viet Nam era, closed, was sold and is now a private residence.

1949 (3-4-1)
The First Victories

1949 was an improvement. Hart scored some points, won some games and finished 3-4-1. The Indians were shutout only twice, actually shutout an opponent scoreless and won a Ventura League game.

The school had 337 students that season which, as in 1948 and for several years thereafter, made Hart a much smaller school than most opponents.
