It's Over
by Eve Adam, a.k.a. Harmonic Eve
Cell Phone
You sensed my innocence --
    you played the game
You'd played before with others.
I heard your words; I took them in,
Not knowing you were a player.
I told you "No" when first we spoke;
You won me with your words.

Were we friends or were we lovers?
I never knew just which.
My love was deep with many facets;
I'd be whatever you needed.
I made allowances for your faults
And hoped you'd see past mine.

I gave you honesty and devotion;
You gave me joy with grief.
I never knew just where you were
With me as friend or lover.
With no commitment as my lover,
You shunned me as your friend.

Obscure were your words --
     obscure was your meaning;
Each time we worked it out.
You hid behind a wall so high
I never reached your heart;
Or if I did, you hid it well
And hated me for caring.

There's a lesson here that I already knew,
And I trusted you knew it as well.
Passion and friendship should never be mixed --
Without commitment established.
I gave my commitment, then allowed my passion,
And assumed you were doing the same.

You said "goodbye" in a roundabout way
That left me unsure of your choice.
I tried again to rekindle the friendship;
You slammed the door in my face.
So many times since first we spoke,
You tried to tell me, "It's nothing."

Now "nothing" it was, and forever will be,
And never will you think of me.
If you play with fire you might get burned;
But not this time; not by me.
I let you go; you're neither lover nor friend,
It was over when barely begun.
