I started learning the lesson of forgiveness as a
young child. Around the time of my birth, my
father left my mother and me. One person after
another disappeared from my life, including my
mother, off and on, over the years. Now I am the
oldest living person in a family of ten cousins on
my mother's side, and other cousins on my father's
side. I have observed many family situations in
which forgiveness is necessary. In addition, I have
learned of many other situations requiring
forgiveness, starting with my grandmother who
was an orphan by the age of nine, and continuing
through my own present days. These six steps
work if we allow them to work. Briefly stated,
they are recognize, recognize, release; and
again, recognize, recognize, and release.
Offering forgiveness does NOT mean
continuing to place ourselves in the
path of receiving injury.
