Collage from positive and
negative prints of photographs plus drawing from studies for
paintings. Duchamp used a one meter rope dropped from a
distance of one meter allowing its resulting shape to determine
a "perfect" line. Cage threw I Ching coins or sticks to choose
the various qualities and placements of sounds to form a musical
score achieving composition outside the confines of taste.
Harlow's algorithm allows taste to select each element of the
collage in isolation. The whole forming through the collection
of blind elements. The philosophical underpinning of
Duchamp-Johns-Cage esthetic descision was that of man creating
like nature instead of recreating nature. Harlow's philosophy:
man is nature.
