Some Tips On Email Manners Windows 98/ME/2000/NT Windows XP Home or
Professional
A Tip Presented on our InfoAve Forums - Written by Milt
I doubt that anyone would put their email address book out in a public place for everyone
to see. However, when emails are sent with all recipients showing.... that is EXACTLY what is being done.
We all frequently
get forwarded emails and at the top of the message there is a list of everyone the email was sent to. Plus we often see addresses
from previous senders. So many people have not been educated on the importance of removing ALL old addresses before forwarding
an email and adding multiple recipients in the BCC line rather than the TO line. Having the addresses of other recipients
showing on forwarded emails is not only bad email manners, it is a violation of the privacy of each recipient and can easily
contribute to the spread of viruses, spam, etc.
To help solve this problem I offer 3 tips:
1) Each of us should
pledge to remove all old email addresses. And, put multiple recipients in BCC when forwarding email or sending a new email.
2)
Each of us should educate all of our email friends on the importance of following the above rules.
3) When sending
email to others, especially if the email is likely something they will forward, use the graphic below as a reminder. The wording
on this forwarding reminder was put together by several forum members and I made it into a graphic. The graphic can be saved
to a convenient spot on your computer and inserted at the end of the email like you would insert a picture. Or, you can follow
the tutorial (located elsewhere in TIPS AND TRICKS) for creating a Signature for Outlook Express. The reminder then can be
set to insert by default or it can easily be inserted manually. Feel free to save and use this graphic.
The problem will never be totally eliminated but our efforts can significantly reduce it. Perhaps future
versions of Outlook Express will be set up so that recipient addresses do not automatically show. Until then--- it is up to
us.
