The Great Vitamin Hoax

These words screamed out at me across the page in a blazing red headline that was four inches high. It was Dr. Julian Whitaker's latest promotional piece for his newsletter Health & Healing, and it was intended that millions of people would read it. Naturally, this was one advertising piece I just had to read.
After the usual introductory "scare the pants off of you" hype more familiar to the readers of the National Enquirer than those who read nutritional newsletters, he finally got down to business.
His first message was that most people taking nutritional supplements were not getting the good out of them because they were in the form of tablets, instead of loose powder filled capsules.
This was a fact that I had discovered many years ago, and was the reason I had convinced Gary Paulsen, president of Vitality Lifechoice, to convert most of our supplements to loose powder filled capsules. Most of our supplements have been in that easy-to-digest and assimilate form for many years. I had discovered that tablets are just too hard for most people to digest, especially older people and those with health problems.
In addition to the fact that tablets are too hard to digest and often result in not being assimilated, I found that by the necessity of the manufacturing process, they had to contain too many additives that might be harmful. For example, most tablets contain what Dr. Whitaker calls DCP, better known as dicalcium-phosphate. This is a form of calcium and phosphorus about as close to bone as you can get.
Tablet makers like it because it really holds those tablets together so they don't break apart in the bottle. The problem is, they don't break apart in your stomach either. Naturally, none of Vitality Lifechoice's supplements contain the dreaded DCP. No "bed-pan bullets" in these supplements.
Dr. Whitaker's second point was the importance of quality, a major priority at Vitality Lifechoice from their inception. As the good doctor points out, cut rate supplements sold in drug stores, even some health food stores, and by mail order offers, are often so cheap you wonder how they can do it. Is there a secret to those low prices? Yes there is! It is called low quality.
As Dr Whitaker points out, independent laboratory tests have shown that these cut rate supplements frequently do not have anywhere near the amount of nutrients claimed on the label. They are so inaccurate, they often do not even agree in amounts from one bottle to the next. Some don't even have any of the claimed nutrients in them. As might be expected, it is the expensive nutrients that are low or missing.
Do you know why? These cut-rate outfits have their products made for them by someone else. The manufacturer generally turns out to be the low bidder on a contract who has cut corners to create the low price.
The only ingredients that the cut-rate seller knows is in those supplements is what their low cost contract producer tells them is in there.
At Vitality Lifechoice, the supplements are produced in their own production facility. Each of the ingredients is covered by a Certified Laboratory Analysis to be of the same high quality that is specified on the supplement label. Every formula is made according to a specific formula according to specifications I have personally established, and which I periodically review for accuracy.
Another point raised by Dr. Whitaker is the issue of freshness. This is a real problem for the cut-rate suppliers because, in order to get rock bottom prices from their contract manufacturer, they have to buy in such large quantities that a lot of it gets old before it is sold. Not at Vitality Lifechoice! Here freshness is automatic. That is because very small batches can be made right in their own facility, just in time to stay current with the computer controlled inventory schedule.
The third point raised by Dr. Whitaker is that time-released supplements do not break down well enough to release their full benefit until long after they are past the point of absorption. What he did not mention is that several research studies have proven that to be true. Which is why I have never formulated any time-released supplements for the Vitality Lifechoice's line of products.
The fourth point raised by Dr. Whitaker is the question of a natural source versus synthetic. His main premise here is that in the case of Vitamin E, natural is the "only" way to go. We have been saying this for over three decades. Unfortunately, he misses a golden opportunity to point out that, while most of the rest of the vitamins are manufactured, many really aren't synthetic.
Here is why. Today, in manufacturing plants all around the world, vast amounts of vitamins are manufactured for us by bacteria and yeast. The bacteria and yeast cells work very hard in giant vats producing a nutrient rich broth. The broth is then harvested and processed to isolate the specific nutrients desired. So, in a way, they are manufactured, and yet in another way, they have a natural origin.
The fifth point of Dr. Whitaker is that one-a-day vitamin formulas based on the 60-year-old RDA (Required Daily Amount) is so out dated and inadequate as to endanger your health. I could not agree more. This is why Vitality Lifechoice has a variety of high potency multiple-nutrient formulas that have been tailored to meet the supplement needs of individuals at all ages and stages of life and health.
The sixth point in Dr. Whitakers attack on the Great Vitamin Hoax is that there are such a wide variety of supplements out in the marketplace today that you, the consumer, just do not know which ones are right for you. No surprise here! His solution is a subscription to his newsletter, this will get you a bundle of little brochures that will tell you which nutrients are right for what purpose.
Once again, we got there first! For nearly a decade, through the International Institute of Nutritional Research, I have provided a manual called the "Product Overview". This is a complete scientific review of each of the Vitality Lifechoice's products, describing in great detail exactly what they do, how they do it, who they are for, how to use them and the suggested amounts for the greatest benefit.
In addition, there is a companion publication titled "Physician's Guide to the Nutritional Support of the Patient During Illness". This guide lists over 150 of the most common ailments, a brief description of their nature and cause, as well as a list of the nutrients most likely to provide benefit.
A seventh point raised by Dr. Whitaker is that most Vitamin C products lose much of their effectiveness because they lack the all-important bioflavonoids. Which is absolutely correct. I became aware of this many years ago. This is why, for over a decade, the Vitamin C formulas of Vitality Lifechoice have contained significant quantities of bioflavonoids to increase the absorption and utilization of the Vitamin C.
The eighth and final point of Dr. Whitaker was that many people in poor health, or those who are simply a little older, have lost much of their ability to digest their nutritional formulas because they do not produce enough of their own digestive enzymes. I realized this many years ago and is why natural digestive enzymes have been available from Vitality Lifechoice for almost a decade.
Not only that, I even created a special line of supplement formulas which include these all important enzymes right in the same capsule, just as Dr. Whitaker is now suggesting. These are known as the "Azyme" formulas, and have been available exclusively from Vitality Lifechoice for many years.
These eight points raised by Dr. Whitaker illustrate the many things most supplements companies are doing wrong. Not only are the people taking such supplements wasting their money, but also, as the good doctor points out, they are actually putting their health at risk.
It should be very comforting to those who are customers of Vitality Lifechoice to know that your supplements not only pass ALL these tests, they have been doing so for many years. Not only in advance of the supplement industry itself, but even years before being brought to the public's attention by such outstanding leaders as Dr. Julian Whitaker.
