Our Mission
The mission of the Fannie Lou Hamer National Institute on Citizenship and Democracy is to promote positive social change by examining the tools and experiences of those who struggle to create, expand, and sustain civil rights, social justice, and citizenship. The Hamer Institute's vision is to nurture a generation of young people engaged in and committed to discourse on these topics.

Goals:
• To critically examine the popular construction of democratic forms of government.
• To understand the conditions under which the struggles of local people lead to enhanced or diminished forms of democracy.
• To develop partnerships with local school boards to integrate movements for civil rights, social justice, and citizenship into social science curricula.
• To introduce diverse populations to the profound impact of movements for civil rights, social justice, and citizenship.
• To guide teachers and students in critically examining the power and purpose of civic literacy.
• To demonstrate to school districts and teachers ways of integrating creative pedagogies into classrooms across the curriculum.
