Debra S. Lee, J.D.

Debra Lee [J.D. University of Tennessee College of Law, 1981; M.A. ESL, 1994] is normally at Nashville State Community College in Nashville, Tennessee; this year, however, she is a Senior English Language Fellow at the CEELI Institute in Prague, the Czech Republic. She is the immediate past Chair of the English for Specific Purposes Interest Section of TESOL and honorary co-president of the Guild of Teachers and Translators of English for Law in Russia. She has taught ESP in Finland, Germany, the Czech Republic, the Marshall Islands, and China, as well as legal research and writing to international LL.M. students in the United States. She has also designed legal and business English curricula, developed materials for specialized legal and business English courses, and co-authored American Legal English: Using Language in Legal Contexts[University of Michigan Press 1999]. Prior to beginning her teaching career, she worked as an attorney in the legal department of a Swiss corporation, and conducted multinational negotiations on international logistic agreements while working for the U.S. government in Germany.

Charles Hall, Ph.D.

Charles Hall [Ph.D. linguistics, University of Florida, 1983] is an associate professor in the Department of English at the University of Memphis in Memphis, Tennessee. He is co-founder of the M.A. And Ph.D. programs in TESL and Applied Linguistics at The University of Memphis as well as co-founder and coordinator of summer TEFL training courses in the Czech Republic at the University of West Bohemia [UWB] and in China at Peking University. Professor Hall hasheld two Senior AY Fulbright Fellowships in the Czech Republic [89-90 Charles University, Prague, and 93-94, UWB, Pilsen]. Additionally, he has lectured in Algeria, Armenia, Bulgaria, China, Croatia, Ecuador, Egypt, Eritrea, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Jordan, Lebanon, Mexico, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Syria, and Tunisia, and at the Salzburg Seminar in Austria. He is co-author of American Legal English [University of Michigan Press, 1999] and several other texts for ESL or EFL composition courses.
