SHAYKH HASSAN ALI CISSE
FOUNDER AND CHAIRMAN
The African American Islamic Institute, Inc. was established in Senegal by it's Founder and Chairman of the Board, Shaykh Hassan Ali Cisse in 1988, and is recognized as an International Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) by the United Nations. It is a Senegal based organization, and is an Institute of the "Nasrul Ilm" foundation, i.e., "Helping Knowledge". The AAII presently has affiliates in The Gambia, Mauritania, Ghana, Nigeria, Togo, Benin, Burkina Faso, The Ivory Coast and the United States. It's New York entity is the parent organization to chapters in Atlanta, Detroit, Memphis, and Washington, D.C. (please check for additional chapter locations). In the U.S. the Institute has been granted tax exempt status under Section 501 (c)(3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code.
Fear of Allah and love of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.S.) provide the guidelines for the Institute's humanitarian activities, which include feeding the hungry, caring for the sick, teaching the unlettered, protecting the interests of women and children, pursuing knowledge and fostering peace and understanding among mankind. By generating a deeper understanding of Islam, in the way of Shaykh Hassan Ali Cisse, the Institute strives to inspire humanity to fulfill its purpose on earth. This purpose is to worship Allah and to build bridges of understanding, compassion and respect among "the nations and tribes" that Allah created "to know one another".

The Institute's objective is to initiate projects that will develop a capability for sustained self-help in the areas of agriculture, healthcare, education, economic development and cultural exchange. By supporting farm projects, the Institute fosters dignity through work and enables people to develop the capability to feed themselves and their families. By providing health care, the Institute will improve the quality of life for thousands of children and adults and leave a legacy of health and well being to future generations. By providing skill training, the Institute develops economic opportunity. By teaching children and adults to read and study Qur'an and Hadith, the Institute promotes literacy and offers future generations a legacy of knowledge and an ethical framework for living.

The African American Islamic Institute, Inc. has established a Qur`anic School in Medina-Kaolack, Senegal, where children from New York, Atlanta, Memphis, Washington, DC, Detroit, London and the Caribbean study Qur`an. They also receive academic support in secular subjects. By this, they receive academic credit, which permits their successful re-entry into the educational system upon their arrival home. Students who have completed their studies by memorizing the entire Qur`an (Hafiz) have been admitted to colleges and universities in the United States and abroad. The School offers children and young adults a unique opportunity to live and study in an Islamic environment, and a rich and meaningful cultural experience. Teachers and educators are recruited to teach Elementary and High School level English and Math, and Computer Literacy, to students who are in Medina to study Qur'an and to local children and adults. This allows the students to keep up with their secular studies while benefiting from living in Africa in an Islamic environment, under the direction and guidance of Shaykh Hassan Cisse.

The Institute has also established a Socio-Medical Center in Medina-Kaolack, Senegal, currently under the Medical Direction of Dr. Karimah Joseph, which recruits physicians and other health care professionals to provide medical care and health education through commitments of anywhere from two weeks to one year of service. Volunteers provide their own airfare, with the Institute providing room and board for the duration of their service.
The physicians and health care professionals also travel into the countryside to provide medical care and health education to the rural community around Kaolack, Senegal.

History of Senegal: by Shaa'ista Tayyab

Senegal is located on the West Coast of Africa. It has 75,000 square miles. In the 15th century, European settlement began where the Portuguese had established an outpost on the coast. The French and British arrived in the 17th century. The country regained complete independence from the Europeans in 1960. Dakar, Senegal's capital and one of Africa's main seaports was originally a small fishing village. The city is famous for its many beautiful Mosques.

Since 1930, French-educated Senegalese authors have produced an impressive amount of outstanding literature with African themes. 40% of the people speak the Wolof language, and the other 60% speak Arabic, English, and their own languages. The nation's exports are peanuts, minerals, cotton, textiles, and hides.
