Any time Bush and his sock puppet Dr. Frist don't get every damned thing they want, it's a victory for us. So yeah, I regret that the Democrats were not able to get more, but frankly if it actually came down to a floor vote, Frist would have won by a couple of votes and that's all it would have taken. Instead, McCain will never make it through the primaries as the radical right will never forgive his "betrayal" and Frist is now wounded because he couldn't deliver. Yeah, I know that 2008 is a long way away, but it's never too early. I'd also say that I'm pretty damned impressed with Harry Reid and I never expected to be. Credit where credit is due.
Friday night - knock off work, have a bite to eat and go see Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy with my sweetie.
Saturday - Mom drives down from the mountains and JS and I take our moms for a belated Mother's Day tour of Duke Gardens (there must have been at least two weddings and a reception going on - perfect day for it) followed by dinner downtown at Spanky's. Hang out with Mom listening to music - I've got her hooked on New Order, she kinda liked John Doe but she's finding Two Dollar Pistols just too country.
Sunday - fix omelets and stuff for breakfast before Mom heads home, then go out to Dick's and buy some new golf clubs for the first time ever (not the first clubs I've had - just the first I've ever bought). Hit practice balls in the yard with JS.
Life doesn't suck.
Big birthday shout-out to my dad, who turned 65 today, fresh off feeding soup last Friday to a few hundred crazies participating in the Assault on Mt. Mitchell - a 117 mile ride from Spartanburg, SC to the summit of Mt. Mitchell. If you're really nice to Dad, he'll give you the recipe for his now world-renowned tomato soup! People that have ridden in past Assaults say that all they can think about the last 20 miles or so is that steaming cup of soup that they know is waiting for them at the finish line.
Speaking of long bike rides, Dad's friend Mark is in Istanbul kicking off his solo summer bike tour tomorrow. Riding (and ferrying where necessary) up the Adriatic, north through Poland and the Baltics, across the southern tip of Finland, Sweden, Denmark and ending up in Stuttgart the first week of August. Check his web site from time to time - the pictures he posted from his 2003 tour from Spain through to Romania were breathtaking.
