prints...ann beeson and fishbone press

Welcome to this web site! I have been a printmaker for 20 years, concentrating on photogravure for the past eight years. I make hand made boxes containing series of prints and computer generated books as Fishbone Press. I also work with a great group of people who make hand made books of prints as tuesdays press.

In addition to my friends at tuesdays press, I belong to another group of artists, aptly called THE ARTISTS GROUP. A multi-media affair, we have been exhibiting together every couple of years since 1987. Our next exhibition is in September, 2002. For more on this subject, check the COMMENTS page.

Chinatown at the Turn of the Century is the latest publication of tuesdays press. In late 1999 and early 2000, we photographed Chinatown pretty thoroughly. Those photographs became the basis for the photogravures in the the book.
The book is completely finished, one copy has gone into a private collection and one is on exhibit at the Honolulu Printmakers Annual Exhibition. The book is in an edition of 15. One copy goes to each of the participating artists. Remaining copies are for sale with the proceeds going to cover expenses. Below is a view of the cover of the book, unfortunately cropped because it is larger than my scanner bed!

We enjoyed, and suffered, over the designing and making of the cover of this book. The black background is black printing ink rolled on paper. We bought brightly colored paper in Chinatown and cut it down to small pieces like confetti, then sprinkled these bits on the wet ink and let it dry. The pieces stuck better than we thought they might and some were helped along with paste.
The characters were carved out on Sintra and printed on red paper with gold flecks, also acquired in Chinatown. I hate to mangle the translation of the characters, which I remember (probably incorrectly) as Sandlewood Wharf.
We realize that the cover design gives no clue to the contents of the book unless you read Chinese. We went just by the look.

For more information on tuesdays press publications, including a list of titles, edition sizes and availability plus prices, please visit the tuesdays press page. And learn more about photogravure after that!

The image created for the book by James Rumford, one of the tuesdays press members, can be seen on the photogravure, about page.
