Please Note:
This is a remnant of our old original 2002-2004 website devoted to shortwave radio listening. We took the page off the net shortly before deciding to go back into regular astronomical observing, and did not have the inclination to do daily shortwave radio logging due to several factors, including the dropping of major English language international shortwave services to north America by many international broadcasters, and the threat of the installation of BPL systems, which would wreck the shortwave bands with their interference. Some of the articles on the original website might be of interest to readers now, who might care to find out about the (now discontined) Icom R75 receiver, which is often not fairly discussed by non-engineering types who don't have the ability to make careful technical comparisons of audio and broadcast products, but instead pass on 'old wives' tales', rumors, and crank complaints. Furthermore, we also have an article about portable shortwave radios that might be of interest. Finally, we have included the original report on the strange noises we picked up in the broadcasts of Radio Habana Cuba, while they were enduring a particularly bad patch of maintenance difficulties: amusing, as it exposes the incompetence of the "radio experts" in the so-called "workers' paradise." These articles will probably no longer be added to, or updated; and as you can imagine of something written for the net as long ago as 2003, a few links are now nonfunctional. But, in case you are interested, I have added a new essay (about the loss of Bob O'Donnell's weekly KSFO computer show) at the end of my article listed below about contributing to Glenn Hauser's shortwave radio mailing list. And, on 29 April 2007, I added a brand-new article on "Optimizing Your SWL'ing Audio Experience": see the menu of articles below for the link. -- srw
