If you need to see two sites at the same time and are tired of waiting for a site to load, you can open another window and perform both tasks simultaneously. In Navigator, from the File menu, select New Web Browser, and select the second site. Another frequent issue is the time spent to download software or other large files. You can continue to work or search other sites, while downloading files. In Navigator, once the download has begun, minimize don't close the download status window. Now you can continuing browsing that site or jump to a different one. If the font used on a particular web site is too small, you can increase it easily. Select a new default font and size. Click OK, then repeat for the other Choose Font... button. If you are searching for a single topic or word on a page, you can use the find function. When downloading software, you are usually presented with a number of sites to download the software from. You should not necessarily pick the one closest to home. One method that works well is to wait until 4:00PM local time and then select a download site on the East Coast. In this way, you can avoid the normal business traffic. If you are downloading from home, then wait until the middle of the night when traffic is slower. It is easy in Netscape to determine the security of the site you are viewing. The small key in the lower left corner indicates the level of security, if any, employed at the site you are currently browsing. A broken key means a non-secure site. A key with two teeth indicates the highest level of security is in place, whereas a key with a single tooth indicates medium security.
You should be aware of which plug-ins you have installed for your copy of Netscape? In the address box, type about:plugins to get details on your plug-ins. Need info on your cache, try about:cache. Also try about:image-cache and about:memory-cache. Occasionally you may want to know if the web sites your have viewed before and bookmarked have been updated. In Netscape, select Bookmarks, Go to Bookmarks, then from the File menu, select What's New? You can instruct Netscape to inspect all bookmarked pages, or just the selected one. Navigator will then highlight all bookmarked items that have changed.
You may occasionally wish to cycle through Netscape Windows. Windows users know about the Alt-Tab trick to cycle through open applications. You can also use Ctrl-Tab to cycle through open Navigator windows. Occasionally Netscape's Reload button doesn't reload the current page. If this is a problem, to ensure the reload takes effect, hold down the Shift key and click on the reload button at the same time. | |
