Dutch Emigration Homepage of Jolanda Hulstein and Birthe Stuijts. In almost every family tree, you will find some relatives that have left their country to settle down in a country with more prospers. As long as there have been emigrants there have been reasons to emigrate. Some left to find better jobs, better education, some searched for land to farm, some wanted to practice their religion freely and some went away to escape wars. Searching for information on emigrated relatives using the internet, is worth the effort. Especially in the USA, there is a lot of usable archive information that can be found.

The Centraal Bureau voor Genealogie (CBG) in The Hague was founded in 1945 and has acquired a central position in the genealogical practice in the Netherlands. Although in Dutch, two of the more important offerings found in the left column of the main page: Zoeken in het Lopend Onderzoek & Een naam aanmelden in het Lopend Onderzoek; can be used by those who speak English thanks to Leo van de Pas who provides the following instructions. Lopend Onderzoek (click to find other people that are researching the same surnames as yourself) is fairly straightforward, just enter a surname in the Dutch style (i.e. for names like de Boer or van Putten, disregard the de, den, der, van, te, ten, ter & the like and enter the Boer or Putten part of the surname) and remember zoek is search. Een naam aanmelden in het Lopend Onderzoek (click to add a surname you are researching so others may contact you) requires you to complete a form. Boxes marked with an * are required & those not so marked are optional. Evt. Vriendnummer = your membership # if you are a member, otherwise leave blank; Dhr./Mevr. = Mr./Mrs.; voorletters* = your initials; Achternaam* your surname; Adres* = your street address; Postcode* = an English term for postcode; Woonplaats* = the place/city where you live; Telefoon = your telephone number; e-mail = an English term for your e-mail address; Datum van ingave = your date of entering this surname; Onderzoek naar* = the surname you are researching; Afkomstig uit = Where does the family you are researching come from; idem = more of where they came from; Periode = time frame that your family resided in the above locations; Opmerkingen = notes about this surname; and finally versturen (to enter your surname) or wissen (to erase the form so you can start over).
