1. Pick a method, might sound simple but there are many different ways to potty train a kid, and they all have their own start
times. You need to look over the 4 main types and decide which one is right for your family.
4 main methods
2. No matter which method you choose you will have to introduce your child to the potty. I recomend allowing them to join
you or preferably a short person closer to their height of the same gender, nothing like seeing just what is expected to get
some motivation. The timming of when you intro it is up to the method you choose. In my opinion you can never intro to early,
just don't force, natural curiosity should bring most kids a knocking at the door.
3. Ask your child to 'pee on demand', do this before you hand over the underware for ECing and Early methods, after for tradditional
and demand. The amount of requests depends on you and your schedule. You can do it at convenient times, before lunch and
nap, etc. Or you can do it on the hour, or just once or twice a day as it pops up, whatever fits best with you.
4. Ask your child to hold it, this doesn't mean you actually will get them to hold it, but that you should start suggesting
that dry diapers are cool, and the more dry you see the sooner underware is comming. or start offering a reward for dry if
follow traditional or demand. If you EC you can still praise dry diapers, even if you think they are to young to understand.
(hand over the underware for Early when you get a few successive drys)
5. Relax, and wait. So long as you built up to it and followed your childs cues, the only hard part is patience.
But should you need to help your child decide that beign a big kid is worth the work of holding the pee for the potty, check
out some extra incentives.
Incentives
What about naps and night time?
That is still up to your family, some people go with all at once, day and nap and night training, others hold off on naps
till they get day time successes.
I think the individual child and bladder size matters more than the 'experts' opinion.
Either way when you decide to start, offer a reward for staying dry, and buy some extra laundry detergent!
Unfortunatly many children do not have a large enough bladder to make it the 10 to 12 hours of bedtime without needing a potty,
so expect some midnight visitors when you start.
