Unfortunate, but true, so unless you wait for your child to demand it, you will need to get your child to want to perform
for you.
If you EC this is actually pretty easy, peeing is a new concept and younger children are not very well diaper trained,
that is they don't have a problem peeing without the diaper to overcome. Generally speaking the ECing means the child is
pretty young to understand a reward anyway. Just take them at convenient times and also watch for little signs, and let them
learn about a perfectly natural function.
For the modern traditional and Early methods you will need to convince your child that using a potty is more fun or more
important than anything they pick. Many incentives exist, whatever you choose be prepared to do it for quite awhile, and
BE CONSISTANT!
You will prolly find that a combination of several rewards is neccessary.
Reward Ideas
1. Small imediate reward, stickers, small parts toy with a billion parts to be pieced out, free call to relative or friend.
2. Chart to build up to a large reward, keep it cheap you want to be doing this every night or every week. Computer time,
or special game with mom or dad, or special bedtime toy all work well. For weekly, a chance to skate or see a movie, getting
a trip to the local park (if it isn't the norm) or swimming pool (joining the Y is usually fairly cheap)
3. Special toys reserved for children trying to be big kids (so you don't have to be perfect but you have to try) In my house
those were all the ones that said 3 and up.
4. Underware, you could give it after peeing in the AM each day. or after naptime if you went back to the daiepr for nap,
incentive to hold it in at night and save it for the potty.
5. I will if you will, oddly, and mainly for boys it is aparently cool to watch daddy peeing, if your willing then go for
it. (and really like people can't see if you use the uranals?)
6. Flushing, I know alot of books tell you not to let your kid see you flush but honestly all the kids I know think it is
the coolest thing in the world. But in my house the rule is you can't flush unless you put something in there.
7. Toilet paper, really I know of course they need it, but it is a reward, specially if you get to do it yourself (after mommy
if needbe). If you don't put any thing in the potty you don't need any. If you talk it up right you can often convince kid
that flushable wipes are a reward too. (special reward for pooping)
8. Bubbles, again you must wash your hands if you use the bathroom or even just try. But it is a reward for trying, and about
the only one besides a parental thanks.
About that underware.
You might think this is a regular reward, but lots of kids think underware is no big deal and a lot of work to have to use
the potty all the time, if your child is one of them, hand over the underware anyway (reserve pullups or diapers for the car
and company). That way they still feel wet and still feel the need to use the potty. Do try to talk it up and make them a
reward but don't worry if it fails.
Extra Incentive
1. Remove some privledges that are really big kid. TV, Video games, toys that say 3 and up, or Computer time, untill your
child is trying to be a big kid(a couple successes or even just one)
2. Close off any room that has been peed in till 'the floor dries' from the cleaner. (in my house, it always took till the
end of the day to dry, regardless of actual dryness)
