If you do a google search for 'average sleep needs of children' you will get a bazzillion hits and many diferent numbers,
but they all tend to fall in the same range.
A general rule of thumb (or two) is easier, and works for all ages, even adults.
If your child is a royal pain (extra temper tantrums, extra whiny, extra klutzy, extra clingy, or a combination thereof) by
bedtime, or naptime, they have been up too long. (a little bit is normal, a lot is a problem)
If your child is ultra hard to settle down, and hyperactive, they are prolly overly tired.
If your child sleeps in on the weekend they are not getting enough during the week. And no the weekend doesn't make up
for it.
If your child falls asleep in the car even when it isn't naptime or bedtime consistantly, they arn't getting enough sleep
at home.
