How do I get my child to stay on the potty long enough to pee?

Some ways to 'con' your child into staying long enough for a success: books, stories, a song, mommy or dad getting ready in the same room, clipping nails (if your kid likes it), counting or the alphabet. Anything your child finds entertaining, but be warned a playing kid doesn't always pee. (Unless of course it is Grandmas new rug!)

You can lead a child to the potty but you can't make them pee (or poop)

My child will pee in the potty but hides to poop.

Welcome to the club! Unless you EC from birth, or wait till they demand the potty, almost ALL the mothers I have spoken to or written to have that same problem. Generally upping the reward, reducing the alone time, waiting it out are the options. But it is nice to know your not alone, wish I had that benefit when I was working with my son.

Also an odd thing both my children poop better if given privacy, stay close by to ensure the safety of the bathroom!

You can also try upping the fiber in the diet, making it easier to go, and more neccessary.
