Descendants of Charles Payne

Generation No. 1

CHARLES PAYNE was born in England, probably about 1810. He married Elizabeth Hayward February 27th, 1834 at St. George's Church, Brandon Hill, Bristol England. The family emigrated to America about 1849, settling in Brooklyn. Charles was a seamen, and reputedly a captain of a vessel. The date and the place of death are unknown but appears to be about 1854, as the Brooklyn city directory lists his wife as a widow in that year.

ELIZABETH HAYWARD was born in England about 1813. The 1860 census has her living with Thomas Wentworth, so i suppose that this is her second marriage. Many records had referred to her as Elizabeth Wentworth and i had assumed incorrectly that this was her maiden name. She lived with her daugther Mary until her death February 10, 1886 in Newark, New Jersey. She is buried with her son Charles in Greenwood cemetery in Brooklyn, New York.
