JOHN S. FERRIS was born in Ireland, probably Ulster, about 1846. According to the records of Yale University, He was graduated from Greenville and Tusculum College in Greenville, Tennessee. He probably learned his trade, carpet cutting, at their prepatory school in the early to mid 1860's. He appears in the 1870 census in Brooklyn, New York. The whereabouts of parents and siblings is a mystery. He married Mary A. Coyle. The couple moved from Brooklyn to New Haven, Connecticut in 1875. He appears in the city directory for that city until 1890, when the entry is changed to Mrs. John S. Ferris. Her entry is changed to widow of John in 1903. His death is a complete mystery. The 1930 census for his son Samuel, lists his father's birth as Northern Ireland, so he was born in one of the 6 counties of the north of Ireland.
MARY A. COYLE was born in Ireland about March 1846. Both the 1900 and 1910 censuses say that she emigrated to this country in 1862. In 1900 she moved with her three sons from New Haven, Connecticut to Newark, New Jersey. She lived in the homes of her sons Sandford and Samuel until her death, April 23, 1921. She is buried in the family grave at Holy Sepulchre in East Orange, New Jersey. The 1930 census lists her place of birth as the Irish Free State, so she was born in one of the 26 counties of the Republic. Donegal would be a good guess.
SAMUEL JOHN FERRIS was born in Brooklyn, New York on May 25, 1870. The parish in which he was baptized is not known. He married Rose Earley June 1, 1903 at Sacred Heart Church in New Haven, Connecticut. The family moved to Newark in 1900. He lived there until his retirement and moved in with his daughter until his death, January 8, 1948. He is buried in the family plot at the Cemetery of the Holy Sepulchre in East Orange, New Jersey.
JAMES HENRY FERRIS was born in Brooklyn, New York on January 20, 1872. He moved to Newark with the family from New Haven, Connecticut in 1900, but moved to Chicago in 1901. He married Virginia Edith Lauck in Chicago on May 7, 1901. He died December 20, 1930 in Chicago.
DR. SANDFORD J. FERRIS was born October 14, 1873 in Brooklyn, New York. He attended Yale medical school and was graduated in 1897. He moved to his home and office at 321 South 9th street Newark, New Jersey in 1902, and lived there until his death February 16, 1930. He married Clara McGuire April 10, 1926 at St. Vincent Ferrer Church in Manhattan, New York. He is buried in the family plot, which he purchased, at Holy Sepulchre in East Orange, New Jersey.
ROSE MARY FERRIS was born on February 19, 1905 in Newark, New Jersey, baptized March 2, 1905 at St. Antonius Church. She married George T. Kennedy in 1932. She died February 2, 1967 in Somers Point, New Jersey. She is buried in the Ferris family plot in East Orange, New Jersey.
SANDFORD FERRIS was born January 25, 1907 in Newark, New Jersey. He died March 4, 1977 in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. He married Adeline Herrick October 11, 1929 in the home of Bertha Cutler. Adeline dies in the late 1930's or early 40's. He married Betty Casper sometime later. They moved to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida in the 1960's.
SAMUEL JOHN FERRIS was born May 21, 1909 in Newark, New Jersey, baptized June 6, 1909 at St. Antoninus Church. He married ?? in the 1930's. He died April 6, 1991 in Mesa, Arizona.
JAMES HENRY FERRIS was born August 27, 1902 in Chicago, Illinois. He married Sally Ann Cooley about 1930. She died May 12, 1933. He married Mildred ...... sometime later. He died April 20, 1984 in Portland Oregon.
SANFORD RAYMOND FERRIS was born May 23, 1905 in Chicago Illinois. He died March .. 1968 in Jonesboro, Arkansas. An Iola Ferris is listed in the SSDI, she may be the wife of Sanford or Harold.
EDITH FERRIS was born on January 28, 1910 in Chicago, Illinois. She married William Hyslop. She died December 5, 1983 in Portland, Oregon. The obituary in the Oregonian only mentioned siblings, no chidren were mentioned.
